It is not always the case that 'locals' will not do the job sometimes they are not even given the chance to apply.

Maybe they aren't given the chance Jan, but we can't keep making that excuse for all of them - too many don't/won't apply for certain jobs (and I'm talking normal able-bodied people here) but still expect their benefits to be paid - should we continue to give people their benefits, when there are more jobs available, but they would rather not do them ?

The appointment of Axelrod by Ed could prove to be a master stroke, it will take an exceptional campaign to sell Ed to the doubters, Obama he is not.

I think that the game of political tennis being played on this very contentious subject is masking the actual point that was being made by Brian, which I believe was the increased use of food banks.
The number shown to be using food banks cannot be an accurate assessment as some of the more astute may be visiting more than one bank and thus inflating the overall figures. Having no political axe to grind, like many people, I am concerned that some families have to resort to using them in the first place because benefits have been cut.
The start point must surely be to encourage those that are able to work to take a job and at least earn a wage even if it doesn't meet their aspirations. Obviously close checks would need to be made to ensure that employers were paying a wage commensurate with the job.
The benefit system should not be regarded as a right but as a means to assist those who are unable to work, with perhaps a 'top up' for those that work and really warrant it. Obviously this is just a simplistic idea but could be considered as a start point.
Do nothing and nothing happens.

spot on brian, the main users are those are working reduced hours without having reduced rent/mortgage.
with those on benefits it is not the cuts so much as having them stopped for no reason then having them reinstated later.
in the meantime people rely on food banks to get by.

I have to agree with Archie here it is tragic that people working are reduced to using food banks, I read elsewhere that Dave has turned down the offer of funding from the EU to help out as he thinks there is no need for them.

#29.
So lets get this straight, the PM moans about sending £2bn to the EU because its unfair, now he's refusing money from the EU because we don't need it.
The sooner we're rid of this charlatan the better.

Pickles is a bit of a fraud promising us weekly rubbish collections but the money on offer to local authorities to do so had so many strings attached that councils turned the money down. I believe that only about 5% of areas have a weekly collection.

I must say that I am quite happy with the bi-weekly rubbish/recycling collections.
Food waste is weekly so no smells.

If people were paid a wage that enabled them to pay their bills and feed their families, they wouldn't give a monkey's a--s what the politicians or bankers got up to.

I think that everyone stressed out enough to need a food bank would find it difficult to come off the fags.
