 - Just been watching the first match (to me) and what a cracker of a first half it was, highest quality football topped up with a howler from arguably the worlds best goalkeeper.

Hopefully the second half will be as exciting.

 - No wonder they call the World Cup the greatest show on earth, the match this evening had everything. Much as I dislike the narcissistic Cristiano Ronaldo his great late equaliser was as memorable as any of the great goals I have seen over many tournaments.

 - I thought Golovin's for Russia's fifth against Saudi Arabia was the equal of Ronaldo's: pretty much identical deadball position, technique and ball-placement but, of course, nowhere near the pressure nor the opposition. Russia looked a decent side and have probably been losing lead-up matches in order to deceive us all. - 'Pass the cow dung, my dropsy's killing me' - Heraclitus

 - Obviously timed to coincide with the competition. When you consider that Alf Ramsey was on a mere £5000 per annum max in 1966 (around £95500 in today's money), and no manager since has come near, despite their inflated salaries and egos, perhaps a wage reduction might attract some better candidates. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-44475075

Point 1: play like Real Madrid for the first 10 minutes. -
Point 2: play like Stoke City for the remainder. -
Point 3: job done, apparently.

 - That is one thing we couldn't describe the Senegal players as Reg but on a serious note I wonder how many people from that country were actually offended or was it just others being offended on their behalf?

 - I think any joke along the lines of 'all people of a certain racial group look the same to me' is racist and offensive.

 - Like most bigotted or racist jokes it says everything about the teller and nothing about the target. Unfortunately it didn't tell us anything we didn't already know about Sugar. - 'Pass the cow dung, my dropsy's killing me' - Heraclitus

Certainly offensive, unpleasant and unnecessary but I am not convinced it is intentionally racist. when I was young it was a common comment from blacks and whites.

 - The issue is about stereotyping not bigotry. The Scots, Welsh, Irish, French and Germans are mildly ridiculed by us and they do the same in return and nothing is ever said it about it. Say the same about someone with black skin and the po- faced are up in arms. - Reginald Barrington and John Buckley like this

 - I may point out, HM1, that you somewhat undermine your own argument by making a rather obvious category mistake. What you refer to when you mention 'Scots, Welsh, Irish, French and Germans' are rather national traits or characteristics, i.e. cultural differences; whereas what you refer to when you mention 'someone with black skin' is plainly race. Despite my proven adoration for leading capitalists and high-quality BBC TV programmes, I doubt that Sugar, despite his elevated status, would be able to tell the difference between Senegalese and, say, Ghanain, national characteristics, so I've no doubt his 'joke' was about 'black skin'. - 'Pass the cow dung, my dropsy's killing me' - Heraclitus
