British use of non-lethal gas in Mesopotamia was merely for crowd control, there is no evidence that people were wiped out en masse, unlike in southern Iraq under Saddam Hussein, where hundreds of thousands of Marsh Arabs found their centuries-old hunting/fishing subsistence lifestyle destroyed by saddam's draining of the marshes. Those who failed to relocate to the cities were then systematically exterminated with sarin and mustard gas in the late 1980's. Why? because Saddam blamed them for his failure to overcome the Iranians in the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war. Additionally the now-drained terrain was more suitable to take heavy armour in his Kuwait occupation project.
