Brian, regarding your above question to Alex, Howard and Peter, I can only assume that you are actually either totally confused or ignorant of the ultimate aims and practices of the EU which is to create, by stealth or otherwise, a "United States" of Europe.

You should be aware that the countries that have adopted the euro ( more fool them! ) do not actually run their own country`s independently but are subjected to the rules and requirements of the EU. They, like us, have the majority of their laws and regulations made for them by the EU in which they are obliged and required to administer whether they like them or not. In effect our own "governments" are not really much more than glorified county councils.

Countries within the EU may indeed have the appearance of being Independent and democratic but this of course is just to keep the natives happy. Each and every one of those governments have themselves limited and restricted powers and has no option but to abide with the many dictats from the Brussels parliament. However, the real power lies of course with the unelected EU commissioners who pull all of the strings. Very democratic!
