Yes I used the L&R nomenclature as that is what others use, but as you correctly ascertained I do not believe it to have been an adequate reflection of the state of politics for some considerable time.
I posited that parties will move towards rather than adopt the parties of government, they have to appear non-extreme but also sufficiently different to convince voters they will get something other than what they will receive which is more of the same just with a different paint job & rosette.
As you suggest the range of policy options is tiny & almost identical between the main players. Whilst this shift is most marked & noticeable in the UK & US it is being repeated across Europe & further afield. We are sadly all being left with a choice between a few establishment parties that are no more than a fag paper apart on pretty much everything.
