The lords
http://www.columnist.org.uk/2013/12/15/ukip-the-byles-bill-and-lords-reform/
No individual who is not elected by the British public, should have office in the British parliament.

i have never seen the point of the house of lords with all the appointees, just turning up when they feel like it and being well remunerated for it - a bit like that building in brussels.

If we had no House of Lords charity shops would struggle to sell all those ermine coats that they wear except at Christmas.
Mind you the building would make quite a lot of social housing for the deprived, but hey where would all the Lords and Ladies go to sleep during the day as The Embankment is used by the Hoy Poloy!

Do nothing and nothing happens.

KeithS it should be a democratic elected Senate similar to the U.S.A . I agree with Keith B and Brian D .

nope,
never agreed with the Lords as it is where political parties/church's just flood it with people they want in there
often to stop them opposing the govt. Both parties guilty.
Of course taking this route farrage would lose out

Personally, I much prefer an appointed House of Lords. As it stands, there is no question of which house is supreme, as only the Commons is democratically elected. That would change if both Houses were elected, and would lead to legislative gridlock. Secondly, the Lords contains a lot of good people, with plenty to offer, who are simply not interested in running for election. The loss of this expertise would be a great shame, especially if it replaced by more politicians playing the same games as they do in the commons. The make-up of the Lords is not perfect, and still needs reform, but it is better than many of the alternatives.

well interesting viewpoint, not one that i share,
the Lords has been used by both major parties to put in friends
as i say often to stifle debate, and to make sure the govt of the day has a majority to stop opposition
The Lords is looking old and in need of update

The problem is not the concept of appointing members. The problem is with those doing the appointing. Make the Lords politically neutral, a council of wise old heads from various backgrounds, with expertise in different fields, and they will do a better job of holding the Commons to account.

sadly you have to trust those doing the appointing
and that they dont have a different agenda
you will find posters on here try to explain they are neutral yet aew active in parties, even if they do stand as indies in parish councils.
Needs to be a better method, and probably letting the people decide is the best way

We don't need the lords.
We pay consultants millions to give advice to parliament.
75 % of legislation comes from the EU, the Uk parliament is a rubber-stamping shop
