  Unfortunately, this is one of the hangovers from Brexit. That politicians (some more than others...) think that it is perfectly acceptable to be economical with the truth - because as long as you state your position loudly enough and passionately enough, you can win the day. The press has long since stopped holding our political class to account, as they too are obsessed with Brexit one way or the others. Facts, it seems, no longer matter.
