    Even the late Mrs T. saw the privatisation of the railways as a step too far!

    I'm not sure that any Friedmanphile could justify the fact that we now pay more in subsidies than we did when the system was nationalised. Anyone that suggests that the current service is better than that of the nationalised predecessor must realise that progress eventually applies to all sectors.

    It should be noted that the East Coast service (a good comparator for those hellbent on privatising their own grandparents) is held as an example of publically owned and not necessarily state run.
