Labour saving their intellectuals for Deal.
Joe Burman – Senior Lecturer in Life Sciences, Ecology Research Group, Canterbury Christ Church University (and candidate for Dover District Council in Mill Hill, Deal).
Insect extinctions are the tip of the iceberg
As well as running for council I also work as a university lecturer and researcher in ecology and conservation science. My specialist area is the conservation of insects, a subject I developed a passion for as a child, where bugs where an important part of my summer holidays (yes, even the ones that bite!). Unfortunately several decades later, many insects are in decline across the world, part of the coming insect apocalypse which has come into the spotlight in recent years. Over 40% of insect species across the world are threatened with extinction!
The main threats to insects are the conversion of land for agriculture and the introduction of agrochemical pollution, and these threats are exacerbated by climate change and the invasion of non-native species. Without a radical change to our environmental policies, these declines could be catastrophic for nature and humankind, since so much of our lifestyle is reliant on the natural ecosystem functioning correctly, including food production, water management and even biotechnology and medicine.
I am encouraged by the recent rhetoric from some politicians across the world about a Green New Deal, and delighted at Labour MPs getting behind this idea which could go some way into halting this drastic loss of biodiversity, but with a Tory government in power I remain on tenterhooks. Protecting nature takes political will and a serious investment in the renewable and sustainable future, as well as the creation of new green technology jobs, so for now, I’m holding my breath.

Maybe not in Deal Bob but the local Parliamentary candidate has a teaching CV that would put your career in the shade - no bog standard comprehensives there.

I certainly expect her past experience in education and indeed her present one
to be flagged up come any election if she has not been deselected by then.

Labour has a problem which I raised with the then chair of Dover Labour where he held the view Labour had to put candidates up in every ward
The problem with that is that they don't have enough people so just anyone into seats
I recall needing to find a candidate some years ago to fill a mill hill St
On the words of T birkett we put up an unknown Mike eddy
No one knew of his background
No one knew if he would be good
And now look at the damage he's caused labour
We then look at others like Nathan Richards another unknown only won by a few votes in one of labour's safest seats
The tory didn't even canvass!
Again he has given local Labour nothing but problems which I did warn them
So it's all well filling all the seats if you have enough people but just dragging people in has seen it can end in tears
Working in the communities is the best way to work towards getting elected in the main most Labour cllrs fail in(not all)
How is labour viewed on DTC another problem
Not many people support political parties dominating parish councils
And it reflects badly
I can only hope we can have an effective opposition soon
And Labour involves itself in communities all the year round not just election time

Some wise words Keith.I worked River ward long before I was elected. You correctly state and it’s working all year round not just elections.Too many. Councillors once elected forget who put them there.I worked for everyone regardless whether they supported me or not .Indeed If I don’t agree with decisions at DDC I still tell them. I Appose planning applications if I think the applications donot benefit the area or wider community..

I just wish the more stupid amongst the electorate could work out they need a good local councillor rather than wasting their vote on what has, what hasn't or what might happen in Westiminster. This year I think there is little hope for sense to prevail as I suspect it will be more about Brexit whatever the outcome.
Maybe for our local elections the rallying cry should be for once think outside your usual party allegiance box and choose who can do what is best for your local area.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

I don't need to justify what I do but having been out of elections for 8 years I thought long and hard about did I really want to stand for DTC
On the one hand it's good to so that I can see first hand. What is going on
My next problem was as I was not in a political party what should I do
After chatting with one party activist I said he would be great for the area
He replied can't do it the cllr from tower hamlets wants her friend in river to be the candidate
I phoned the party explaining they already have an activist working with the assoc
Reply being this lady is the candidate I explained she's unknown and we are fed up of absent cllrs so I said unless you reconsider I will stand (this was after many in the ward from all the parties and no party urged me to do so)
They said they would win anyway
So I stood and won by 180
And that party came third!!
I got help from all 4 major parties
All secretly lol
It's a shame the party didn't listen
As it could have saved me a lot of my free time
On my Facebook page I do reports each few days I'm now up to 357!
I intend to reach 500 by time I leave in May
I know i would win if I stood again
But I have a family life as well
And having witnessed the party politics played out on DTC. Its not for me I'm afraid
I hoped we could get cllr run councils as well I pushed this but few supported it
