Mr Buckley, on an Islam vs another religion basis FGM is prevalent in some followers of Islam but on an Islam vs all other religions basis it is not true. This fact is available here (see the two charts in particular)... https://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2016/02/female-genital-mutilation-not-uniquely-muslim-problem/ Interestingly, the 2nd graph identifies three 'religions', these being Muslim, Catholics and Other Christians. Now Catholics are Christians (I'll have you know) so just add those two together and compare them to Muslims. Bear in mind that these are predominately countries of the African sahel and you'll note that FGM is actually much more of a cultural issue rather than a specifically religious one.

It is also important to note that while FGM is practiced in Egypt, which is predominantly Muslim, it is not practiced in many other countries with predominantly Muslim populations, such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The association of FGM with Islam has been refuted by many Muslim scholars and theologians who say that FGM is not prescribed in the Qu'ran and is contradictory to the teachings of Islam. Source of this paragraph: Human Rights Watch [with some truncating for brevity].

I accept your point about "mainly", however, the above should prove the Captain's misconception false - it isn't "mainly" an Islamic problem.
