Of course we want honesty from our representatives and we want them to truly represent their community and its diversity of views and opinions rather than the factional interest of the party the representative belongs to, perhaps that is expecting too much of people who choose to run for office....

My personal view is not very dissimilar from Mr Garstin's - namely we should continue the rich and cherished tradition that the UK has of offering safe haven to those genuinely in fear for their safety and/or life - i.e. we continue to play our part in offering asylum to those who genuinely need it.

Under current EU rules there is little we can do regarding EU Citizens coming to the UK, though we could and should look at sensible residency requirements and a set level of NI/tax contributions in order to qualify for benefits/pensions/helathcare and attempt to reach agreement that similar rules/standards apply across all member states.

As for economic migration from outside the EU, we need to consider whether we have skills/labour gaps/shortages that require filling in the short to medium term and operate some form of points system (similar perhaps to Canada or Australia or NZ) whereby people with the requisite skills etc are granted the right to enter the UK for a period (say 5 years) subject to them having a firm job offer or getting work within say 3 months. We should also work with our fellow EU members to strengthen compliance with Shengen and ensure there is a central EU fund to pay for enhanced border controls and security on the EU's southern and eastern borders etc.
