there was a lot of talk about credit unions a few years back roger then it all died a death, i agree it would be better if councils got involved in helping setting them up.

Keep councils out of the way Howard they couldn't run a whelk stall.
What will they do when borrowers fall behind with payments?

Do not trust Councils - they will not grasp or understand this.

Maybe if we did not live in such a 'buy now pay later' society loan companies like Wonga might not exist.

here I am agreeing again
but some do have difficulty managing
that's not to say they are right
credit unions with low interest rates a better option
and now I understand the churchs are looking to get involved as well

Credit Unions need cash to get started so they have money to lend to those who need it. It could be County, District, Town or Parish Councils, it could also be other local people (individuals and bodies) as well as local churches too of course - even the Town Team could put money in.
I'll try and find out what kind of return investers/savers would receive.

Roger
If people are in the dire times of having to lend
then at least not paying over 1,400% with Wonga (and others like them) must be the way forward.
Credit unions is one option
church's are looking to also do much the same as credit unions but they also could not take on all those that lend
but could help towards it
so there are options out there

Yeah that will be interesting, all those who've never been near a church queueing up to borrow money from them.
What happens when they miss a payment - does the vicar pop round and kneecap them?
Oh hang on a minute, the CofE already invest in Wonga they wouldn't want to jeopardise their portfolio.

Be fair Keith - he is new in the job and was not directly responsible for the church investments and cannot possible know every holding in the portfolio

David Cameron humiliated me, says Peter Cruddas - the man who bankrolled the Tory party
Ex-treasurer attacks PM after victory in'cash-for-access' case
One of the Conservatives' largest donors launched a scathing attack on the party he once bankrolled,
accusing David Cameron and his officials of subjecting him to "public humiliation" over false "cash
for access" allegations.
Peter Cruddas, the Tories' former treasurer, said he was "cut off" and "made to feel like an outcast"
within hours of the publication of a newspaper report that claimed he was offering Tory donors
inappropriate access to the Prime Minister for a fee of £250,000.
Today the High Court ruled in favour of Mr Cruddas in his libel claim against The Sunday Times
for defamation and malicious falsehood, and awarded him £180,000 in damages.
The judge said the story, based on an undercover "sting" operation, had given a highly misleading
impression of Mr Cruddas's conduct. He said the report of what he said was "completely
unacceptable and wrong".
Speaking after the judgment Mr Cruddas - who has donated £1.2m to the party since Mr Cameron
became leader in 2005 - attacked not just The Sunday Times but also the Conservatives, and
specifically Mr Cameron, for rushing to judgement.
"The Conservative Party cut me off within two hours of the story breaking and did not want to hear
my side of the story," he said. "I was constructively dismissed from my role as party treasurer and
made to feel like an outcast as the Prime Minister and the party lined up to criticise me on television
and radio. This hurt me immensely and further damaged my reputation.
