    Actually, all the politicians I know are decent people. But sometimes they stoop below their own standards, believing their opponents to be less than worthy, and being egged on by their more fanatical acolytes. Accusing a rival of hypocrisy or dishonesty is a particularly dangerous tactic which is almost guaranteed to backfire.
