Someone doing nothing would be a lot better than the present incumbent and there would be no chance of you making a complete arse of yourself, becoming a national laughing stock and bringing the post into further disrepute?
£85,000 pa should go some way to providing insurance for any vehicles you might have and I am quite happy to take £15,000 pa to act as a 'foul mouthed youth advisor' (copyright Daily Mail) if I can be of assistance.
For God's sake don't follow Reg's advice and become a councilor who is 'vocal and active'! I can assure you from experience that all you will get is grief and opprobrium however well intentioned you might be .........................

- 10 April 2016 08:52312747A great shame that parish level politics permit candidates to state political party allegiances and receive party support. It encourages voters to focus on tribal issues rather than the quality of the candidates, and makes elected members obey instructions from tribal elders rather than make up their own minds on the matters before the council. If I ruled the world I would ban tribalism from all except general elections.
Furthermore I would disqualify anyone who has ever been an MP from sitting in the Lords. If someone has retired as an MP they have retired on a good pension and are in no need of daily allowances to top it up.
