Why don’t some of you Councillors ask questions of theChief Constable ?.
The local commander held court recently in town and promised he would deal with the problem Sue. Mentioned what a lovely town we have and that local people and visitors deserved better.

Cannot both councils use the same car with the same driver?

That would not work .The Chairman of DDC s Car is also used by senior officers of the Council.Chairman of DDC attends different functions to Dover Town Mayor .The Chairman Of DDC goes beyond the District boundary to events .

Can't they get a bus, train or use their own cars like everyone else has to do?

I am sure an arrangement between DTC and a local taxi firm would be a lot cheaper, pick up and collection time could easily be arranged in advance.
As most people drive why not give a fuel allowance as I bet there are not many times when the mayor actually needs to be driven in a fancy car.

It’s the insurance of the chain Jan.

I did use buses but not wearing the chain. When you wear the chain you have to be watchful in case someone tries to snatch it.

Do away with the 'chain' then or better still the out of date position.

Insurance is a flexible thing if that is the rather silly excuse they are giving, the mayor only needs to wear it for the occasional formal function not every meeting. I am sure the chain would be just as safe in a taxi or private car as a DTC owned car.

No insurer would cover the cost of the chain unless it only travelled in a designated vehicle, was told the value of it years ago and I have forgotten the amount but it was eye watering. The Town Sergeant is responsible for its safe keeping and if the Mayor fell overboard from a ferry his responsibility is to save the bling.

If it's worth a significant sum then I'd suggest the Council sell it and with the money buy a successful shop in town and run it as business for the benefit of the community. What could possibly go wrong?

It's about the position of course if enough people don't support it they can always call for it to be disbanded

Back to the comments re Mayoral or Chairman’s official cars. The driver or Civic Wardens are responsible for fixing the chain of office on the shoulders of Mayor or Chairman .The chains are heavy and you cannot pin them on to your self .Its not like a necklace ,Engagements are not once a week well it wasn’t when I was Chairman .Use of buses out of the question not many run at night .

I think you mean evenings Sue, I don't remember any night buses locally. Back to the issue of the role of mayor, I am broadly in favour of keeping as a good one is more than worth the money spent.

Sorry but I can see no difference between a mayor and a council leader except for a doubtful title and an outdated outfit that in modern times looks as if it was made from some old curtains.
A Lord Mayor is different and definitely a figure head and of some importance unlike our town councillor who is chosen by his or her pals possibly because of past or future favours.

Schools and voluntary organisations invite Mayors along to hand out certificates/prizes/trophies etc and many parents like photos of their offspring with someone wearing a chain of office. New businesses opening like a photo call of themselves with a Mayor or council leader cutting tape as they know that they will get free publicity in the local press and social media. If there is a function at the Town Hall with local councillors going in or out dressed up the tourists click away like mad with their cameras much the same as we do when we see similar spectacles abroad.
