Well done Howard with the pix. This band spent last night in the Premier Inn. Saw them all this morning having their picture taken but didnt twigge as to what they were up to. They had a fantastic double tiered coach with a tow trailer the same size...it came down the seafront last night looking like a train. I thought it was the old days all over again...for a moment.

It was a marvellous event, great weather, super musicians, spoilt only by a few disrepectful people outside the town hall.
The ceremony at St James cemetery
A quiet moment afterwards at the memorial
No health and safety in sight
And two outside the town hall, you might just spot Howard

caught up with this interesting duo after the ceremony.
on the left marian munt who has just retired from the district council, she let slip that she is 80.
not the reason she is retiring though, suffered an injury in a fall over an errant paving stone that has caused damage to her eyesight.
on the right is keith langsford, volunteer extraordinaire, hi-kent being his main work load but gained plaudits for other contributions to local causes.
all long before the "big society" was dreamed up.

great work ray, the ignorant who just shoved through the two minutes silence left me dumbstruck.
what did they think all those people were standing there stock still in silence for?

It's the same every year. I did at one time suggest marshals to stop it happening but apparently you can't impede people.

If Chris reads this could he explain to us what the robes he was wearing represented, looked a bit legalistic in a gothic sort of way!

Looks like an academic gown, Ray, minus mortar-board of course!

Without raising the public toilet issue I would say that it's a bog standard councillor's robe.

I can tell you that those robes are demonstration of how desperately civic robes need cleaning. They have the ability to absorb everything, heat in the sun and taking on the smell of wet dogs in the rain.
I will have to ask what they represent but a quick guide is that black is for councillors and red is mayor and former mayors.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

This year was my first attendance at the ceremony and I can tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed it. I found the ceremony at St James most moving and stirring at the same time, the band from Belgium was superb! The ringing of the bell in the town was also excellent and my only regret is that more people in Dover don't know what it is and attend properly rather than just coincidentally being in that part of town at the time. I shall certainly try and make attendance a habit in the future.

Hi,
This is a question to
Ed Connell. I found on internet the photo of the Vindictive returning from Zeebrugge and I landed on this forum. I see it's a photo from out of a magazine and that means that the original is somewhere. Can you tell me more about the photo? Does it mention where the original is? I'm asking you this because I have the same painting in my living room. It shows the same scenery but it's painted a bit different.
Thanks & bye.

Hi Frank. I regret that I am away from home at the moment working on a ferry and shall not be home until next Wednesday. I cannot see the picture you are referring to as none of the pictures on this thread are downloading, just showing up as an 'x'. I think that you are probably referring to a dramatic painting with orange tints. Unfortunately, I cannot find a copy on my laptop hard drive. When I get home I shall look it out and get back to you. I am sure that this will have been obtained off eBay and is probably either from "The Graphic" or the "Illustrated London News." My recollection is that it is a full page double spread on glossy paper. Regards Ed.

Hi Frank. I am home now and have looked out the illustration in question in post #16. It is entitled "The return of the Vindictive from Zeebrugge on St. George's Day" and was drawn by Charles Dixon R.I.
It is a double page spread from "The Graphic", Summer Number, June 15th 1918.
Your picture in post #36 is different in many respects and appears to be a copy with additional colouring.

Hi Ed, thanks for your quick reply and the information.
The original is quite old as I can read. To be honest, I like my copy more because the colors are warmer, but that's a personal opinion.
Where should be the original? Museum or private collection?
Bye.
