I've been to Christmas markets in Prague and Berlin and loved both of them. The accommodation there was good too.

London's South Bank hosts a Christmas market. Amiens has one of the largest in Northern France and has a breathtaking son et lumiere on the cathedral too.

I always take the chance to visit the markets when working in Europe, and my favourite? Birmingham. Apparently Winchester has a good one.

Just got back from the Christmas Markets in Cologne and Koblenz, they were absolutely Magical!! Daughters loved it, we took a Rhine River Cruise to get there
Here's a few photo's
Ice skating around the statue of Frederick William III in Cologne's 'AlterMarkt'
Christmas Market shopping in Koblenz, each window on the roof has the advent dates all lit up in the evening
One on the many delightful stalls
The 'Dom Markt' which surrounds the magnificent Cologne Cathedral
Two photos of Cologne's 'Engels-Mart' which was a wonderful sight
The wonderful little huts had delicious food and drinks, I loved the Feuerzangen bowle (Rum dipping over a sugar cone, lit up with fire in spiced wine)

Can't help thinking Connaught Park would make a wonderful setting for a Christmas market......

I think if it was in Pencester or Marklet Sq./Cannon Street./ Biggin St. it would help the shops too - at Connaught, it wouldn't,

A Christmas Market at Connaught Park, I like that idea Lesley. As Roger says above it wouldn't necessarily help the shops in Dover town but it would I'm sure draw the crowds to Connaught Park to see the magic of a Christmas Market complete with Angels mingling with the children helping them to make their Christmas wishes, I'm getting carried away now
When we had our Pimm's in the Park Party Day it drew crowds upwards of 200 plus & when Nigel Collor had the film showing there every year the crowds came too, complete with blankets to keep them warm. So food for thought!!

Connaught Park is a lovely idea but sadly not very practical, up a steep hill, limited public transport and nowhere for all the cars to park.
I agree Pencester would be a better position, certainly more central and easier to get to for many, but sadly such a market is only a pipe dream.

Rather than calling it a market, why not a winter festival? Transport could be provided from the town centre to avoid parking issues and local groups could hold stalls to help with their fundraising. Music and lights would enhance the beauty of the gardens and by being a little way out of town may prove to be a blessing in disguise.
