20:2275053There`s never going to be any is there? Let`s be honest here, even before, between and after the two world wars, there`s never been any peace. With a massive growth in the human population on this planet, along with politics, religion, money, greed and corruption, peace will never come in our time or in the future. How do other members view it all, the future of the human race?
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

we intelligent beings destroy the beautiful natural things on our planet, little chance of us unattractive humans doing anything positive and trying just to get along.

21:2975066Colin, I wrote a nice article: Kent: how agriculture prevailed over industry. Now just google that title, it's online, costs nought to read, but will answer your question. It will explain how our County remained so beautiful! My articles aim at being hope-inspiring, positive, and sometimes it takes me a lot of research to write them.
Now just put a cup of coffee in front of you, relax, and have a nice read.

09:4775092I am not sure whether 'world peace' would actually be a good thing... Sounds wonderful and no-one really likes war and conflict after all, with all the pain and suffering it causes. But would we not all die of boredom instead? Not to have that wonderful and impressive military hardware to look and wonder at.... mmmmmm
And then, of course, has not conflict driven human developement in many positive ways. Is not conflict a necessary part of what makes us human and drives us forward.

10:2275095There will be plenty - there must be. Defence, fortunately, is being treated as a special case and will not suffer the extent of the cuts being applied to most other departments. Personally Defence is the only department I would ring fence and protect from cuts. Defence must be the no 1 priority for more spending as soon as the economy allows.

11:0175099Wait and see what the outcome is Brian - all we are seeing is speculation at the moment.
Sadly there are cuts - the whole Defence budget was left an underfunded mess after all.

11:0875101I was hoping to conduct a Fantastic War against unemployment in Kent! Well, Channel Dash! Too many wars spoil the soup, I suppose, Barry! I'd have though our neighbours and allies over the Waters would have joined with us in the proposed War and followed our example (if we had come up with results).
Well does all that amswer your question, Colin?

11:3275103i see that even hilary clinton is sounding off now about the proposed cuts in defence spending.
at least that shows they are dependent on us as an ally.

11:3375104Unfortunately as I see it, wars are essential. We`ve got to where we are now through them. Our technology went up in leaps and bounds after the two world wars, and more so after the second. This thread came about after a recent conversation with someone when they were whingeing about the money spent on space research and exploration, something I`ve heard down the years. This is the future, yet I can`t understand why the U.S. failed to carry on with it`s star wars programme of the 80s, (which ended the cold war I believe), as whoever has control up above, has control of the whole planet. Much more effective than a few submarine`s?

13:5375119I was going to sort out world peace next year but I am afraid that something has come up - anyway sorting out a cure for all illness ought to come first so can it wait???

14:0275120I`m sure we can wait a little longer David, and hope you`re feeling better now. Illness though, exactly the same as peace. Never will be a cure for it all, another strain will evolve to keep the constant war against virus`s going.

14:2575122Colin, your last post here seems somewhat in conrtadiction with your opening salvo on post 1.
As for me, I'm always ready to to defend our Shores, but don't count on me enlisting for some over-sees war in the name of 'democracy', in whichis case you will have to cancel my name from the list of eligible citizens at arms to call up.

14:3175123Athenian hoplites were being sent out to fight for democracy, until they went to Sicily with the Athenian fleet, and an array of allies. Things were not quite as they had immagined, so they sent another contingent, and then another large naval force and army, including again many allies. But they later lost almost the whole expedition.
Try reading Tucide, a contemporary of what happened, an Athenian and all!

I don't think you will have to wait long for your conflict, keep the cuts coming and keep treating people the way you are now, you won't have long to wait. Remember the poll tax
