15:2211941Vic, well done to your boss who has secured local employment for an international venue.
I was impressed by the level of drive of the workforce & management.
They are an unsung business bringing a national expertise on the borders of our District.
Have a good year.

15:4811944Thank you for that Mr Watkins.
Also thank you for coming around to our Workshop some time ago it is a very good set up and most of us have been there alot of years and we do have a very good boss, and the workforce is good most lads working alot of hours and doing a good job all I do is help out were I can.
As you know most but not all is away from Dover but we have done alot of work for schools and the water company and D.H.B. at times and hope for more, most of the workers are local lads from Dover and Folkestone.,and because of the good management and the way things get done we have alot of work on at this bad time, but always room for more.

20:3811966I'll leave Vic to give you the details but would add that the Eco Home displayed at the Ideal Home Exhibition 2008 had its steel frame constructed here locally by this very same company.

21:0012461i believe that kensington and chelsea is the wealthiest borough in the country.
not much we can do to match them.
keith might have meant the football clubs though, mind you it might be difficult rustling up the money for john terry.

21:2912468I was siting in the van with my mate having a cup of tea in Chelsea and he was showing me Topgear on his phone and it was a car race beween a car and a jet the car was the most expensive car in the world cost of this car was over 1 million pounds each top speed of over195m.p.h. and in the race the car had to go at top speed for two miles the jet had to go 1 mile horizontal up and the same down both there was a point that they had to get to on the ground and the plane won but only just, anyway they only made ten of the cars in the world, and yes just as we got out of the van one of them went by us the reg/number was 1B so there is still alot of cash about a car costing over 1 million in the road at Chelsea and it was only going about 25.m.p.h.

22:4912482Not in the Ticket Offices, more passengers 8% increase to pay Shareholders then with everyone sitting in the offices in London who do they look at get rid of those that the public can see.Drivers won't go for obvious reasons,Guards jobs will change as some of them will become Train Managers.Smaller stations will close especially those at part time Stations but they have to change the agreement they have when they took over.So all most certainly means Station staff. We are 24 hours a day as we are an (advantix) guards depot we make up count the money and do the accountancy for the Guards and the last guard is in at 01.30 and they start again just after 4am.
So with 5 members of staff and being 24hrs a day and 363 days a year. This means that e only have 2 members of staff in the ticket office between 07.40 and 11.50.This leads to ques in the afternoon and evening. We have asked for an additional member of staff. But they only did this a few times when they had staff not covering leave,in fact on my shift last summer I only ever had one person extra on one day!
So unless they cut out a Guards depot, and with the new High Speed Trains coming to Dover, that could still cut them out by making the Guards work out of Ramsgate which they do now.
The problem is I don't want to give them ideas, and of course I can't really comment too much on this as Free speech doesn't exsist on the Railways. But after 35 years I have never enjoyed the job less now that at any of that time.More and more time is spent working with computers and less time with the public, and they think the TVM the Ticket Vending Machine is the answer to everything. But you put in there single to London after 10.00 or advance purchase og group 3 or 4 ticket and you don't get what you want.
After 35 years and virtually having been displaced from my job and reapplying for the same job I am doing 10 or 12 times,of course everytime you do this there is one job less.
Who remembers when we had the Travel Centre where we did complicated and European bookings, that closed because we were too good at it.Then we had 12 Clerks now it is 5,and we can't even take Euro's.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

09:0912488Yes a great shame about the 300 jobs loss. I suspect some organisations will let staff go and hide it behind the recession. Its like an easier way to bury the bad news.
Sorry to hear of that tale of woe there John. Great shame when anyone has to re-apply for their own job. Very similar to what has just happened with Dover Harbour Board. The strike was lost there and the staff are now being outsourced as we speak.
But the railways are in an odd situation, fares going up and staff being laid off, and who in Dover will be able to afford the new High Speed Train fares when it gets here.

09:1112489Maybe, from what you say John, the people making the decisions about cutting staff, don't fully understand how the "system" works, whether on ticketing (the TVM) or staff rotas etc.
They should know how costs can be reduced, but some costs just have to be.
