As the annual tennis extravaganza quickly approaches the lush greens of Wimbledon with the usual over blown emphasis on a male British winner since Stockport born (my birth place) Fred Perry won in '36 it may be worth noting that cash strapped BBC who are forever impersonating a scene from Oliver Twist with their begging bowl out asking the licence payer for 'more' have decided to hire another British failed tennis hope, Tim Henman, to commentate on this years play action and no doubt rain.
Now I don't want you to choke on your strawberries and cream (if you can afford them)
but he is being paid £14,000 ...per day...yes per day and will pocket a cool £400k for his 2 week stint.
Wooden top ''nice but dim'' Tim was critised by viewers last year for his monosyballic commentary. Just how long can the BBC justify these ''talent payments'' as they are referred to remains to be seen. It only attracted 3 million viewers last year..an expensive tradition to uphold.

It's not the same since the heyday of Ginnie Wade, Jimmy Connors, Borg and Billie Jean!! I'll just go and fetch my zimmer frame.........

Bern, I will join you with my zimmer frame and raise you one by remembering Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Pancho Gonzales, John Newcombe among others.

Was it Ken Rosewall or John Newcombe who always used to tap the net-post with his racquet before the match for good luck? Great names there!

Rod Laver! What a player.
However, it seems that things may not go so well at Wimbledon this year, there being a dearth of strawberries, due to the weather conditions.

the most exciting time for me was when borg, mcenroe and conners were vying for supremacy.
some of the rallies were spellbinding, the wooden rackets were not good enough for too many aces.
I used to take a few days holiday just to watch, then, it was so gripping! Not now, sadly, although I have a soft spot for the young Scottish lad - probably because he is around the same age as but just a wee bit older than my son. There - my achilles heel!!

I went off Andy Murray when he replied to a commentators question about an England football match in the world cup. He said, rather unsportingly, that he would never wish England well and always supported the opposition, regardless.
So up him and his tantrum prima donna kilt.

Jan, I had a major crush on llie Nastase back in the 70's, guess that qualifies me as a member of the zimmer frame brigade alongside yourself, Bern and not to mention our very own Marek

many women had a crush on "mr nastase" as he liked umpires to call him.
quite a ladies man by all accounts, he married a french socialite who loved all the good things that his money could buy.
when he had his credit card stolen he remarked that he hoped the thief would not be caught soon as he was spending less than his wife.

Murray always reminds me of the actor who plays Marlon Dingle, the pub chef in Emmerdale.

but connors, nastasy mc enroe all very talented players
all came with the crowd you would always be entertined whenb connors/mc enroe, nastasy or co were on court
great days
itrs like the darts days
the best were with jockie wilson, john lowe, and co and all the rebels
you never knew with -jocky wilson if yoyu were to get a great game
or a game of 22 scores
when they all broke away the new lot not so good at making the rebel bit and having fun, but some of the old players now commentators still try to keep it going

Hey as much as I enjoy a good ''over the garden wall'' bitching session and nostalgia trip does nobody else mind that Henman is receiving £200k of tax payers money not to mention free tickets to waffle on about Wimbledon?
Or am I just having a bad day?
