12 May 2014 20:54266190I,ve heard that windows 8 is a bit of a pig to use.I,m still on the old xp system but will need to buy a new pc soon as this one is about on its last legs.Many have recommended i use windows 7 as im told its fairly straightforward to use.Thing is i want to buy a new laptop and have been told that all new ones are on windows 8.Is it possible to still buy one on windows 7? - Bob Whysman

Whether you can buy a computer with Windows 7, I wouldn't know but Microsoft do tend to bring out a new OS and then phase out the security updates for the existing ones. This may be worth taking into account when you purchase a new computer.
I had Windows XP and then Vista and now Windows 8.1.
I can't speak for Windows 7 but both Vista and windows 8 provided their own problems but with every new update Windows 8 has become easier. It is possible to tweak the system to make it perform more in the way that suits you, so if you approach it with an open mind it soon becomes easy to handle!
It was designed to be useable on tablet and touchscreen computers and therein lies the conundrum! By setting the system to start up with a desktop screen it soon becomes more familiar and has many new advantages to offer.
The speed of the 64 bit system is impressive and my laptop is up and running in approximately 25 seconds.....not as fast as the iPad but certainly a vast improvement on XP or Vista.
Live mail is the email client, which again takes a little getting used to but is OK once you set it up to suit you!
To sum it up, I was spitting feathers when I first used it, but am quite happy with it now.
Just as an aside for anyone who resents paying the annual subscription for Microsoft word, I use Open Office which is free and ticks all the right boxes.Do nothing and nothing happens. - Andy B

From what I have read and heard the Windows 8 seems to be a complete challenge, I am dreading changing to it when my present computer dies so much so I might go for a second hand one again.-----------------------------------------------------------------------

13 May 2014 19:23266267Andy B, if you are happy with your computer running XP, why not consider keeping it offline and use it for music, photo's, letters etc. and perhaps buy an ipad or one of the other excellent tablets that are available for your online activity?
I suggest this as they are fast, convenient and able to perform all of the tasks that you may need online.
They have a smaller storage capacity than a computer Hard Drive but there is the option of cloud storage, or some can extend their capacity by storing on a USB memory stick or a card, which you could also use to transfer files to your XP computer!
It is also possible to print via Wi Fi or the Cloud too.
They are so convenient that I use mine whilst watching TV or just to play catchup on news. They are also mobile enough to take with you when making a purchase of any large items to compare prices in store with others online which has helped me get a price match reduction a few times!

20 June 2014 13:24268395I have been having trouble with Internet Explorer 11 using the quote in my reply. I thought that it was a Windows 8.1 problem but it turns out it is in fact a compatibility issue which can easily be resolved by taking the following action:
What you need to do is:
1) Load a page on this site.
2) Click the gear symbol in the top right corner, beneath the X.
3) Select "Compatibility View Settings"
4) Click "add" if Westeros is in the text box.
The site should reload and allow you to quote now.
