13:2475583barryw,if there is no aircraft on the carrier or no ground troops to do clear up ops then we would be less than capable of doing the job in hand.

13:3575587BarryW is spot on - and not only do terrorists not work in a vacuum neither do governments, and there has to be a high degree of networking between countries to ensure a safer world. That includes opportunities to share and manage each others hardware.

18:1175636Brian - you have just been saying that we should fully disarm....
Now you have changed your mind, complaining about the cuts caused by Labour's incompetence....
My blog that I will upload later will be commenting further on defence issues.

18:2275640Brian, with regards to defence, it looks like you are trying to sit on it!

19:4375666you may be missing the point brian, we could always send empty aircraft carriers to sort out the problem.

21:0475679Whatever happen`s, just remember and don`t forget Chamberlain, "Peace in our time". Lets not see history repeating itself.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

21:1075680Exactly.

21:2075681Paul B,
I can understand the governments caution when it comes to the navy.
I think it makes sound tactical sense to give the navy 2 brand new aircraft carriers and no planes.
One only has to recall the navies pathetic responce to the Iranians who stole one of the sailors ipod. I mean if the sailors are going to come on telly crying about that, just imagine what would happen if some unfriendly fuzzy took a pop at one of the navies planes. At least by not giving the navy planes we remove the moral dilemma there commanders would be faced with I.E. Whether to cut and run or surrender.

21:5175686very succinct bob, very similar to the c.i.a. cove that once said to president kennedy, "when you have them by the b*lls the hearts and minds soon follow.

21:5775688Howard,
On the subject of apposite quotes, I can't watch Nick Clegg (who is apparently Deputy Prime Minister!) without thinking of what Lynden B. Johnson said of J. Edgar Hoover 'It's better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in.'
