Dover lifeboat takes part in rescue of two men from life raft after their motor cruiser sinks

An EPIRB alert from a rapidly sinking motor cruiser sparked an immediate rescue response from Dover lifeboat and other vessels on Wednesday (12th) afternoon.

The two men aboard the 40' long motor cruiser had to take to their life raft when their vessel began to fill rapidly with water and to sink. One of the men was also able to make a 999 call to Dover Coastguard confirming their predicament.

Dover lifeboat under the command of Coxswain Mark Finnis was quickly underway to the scene. Whilst the lifeboat was making best speed for the site other vessels were also going to the aid of the two men and these included a Canadian naval ship, two Range Safety Boats and Port of Dover Police's RIB.

On arrival the lifeboat crew found that the two men had been picked up by the Canadian naval vessel. They were transferred to the lifeboat a tow line was attached to the semi submerged boat to allow it to be towed clear from the busy shipping lanes. Due to the wreck's trailing anchor it was not possible to bring it close enough to shore to beach it so it had to be cut loose and abandoned in shallow water off Sandgate.

Fortunately conditions during the incident were good with light winds and neither of the two men were injured during their narrow escape and were brought back to Dover aboard the lifeboat. The exact cause of the sinking is unknown although it is possible that the vessel struck a submerged object which tore into the hull.
