Back in the early 50's when I were a lad I was often sent there to collect a 7lb tin of treacle. That place was a wholesale distributor and for the life of me I can't remember the name, UCB or something.
Oh dear getting maudlin now.

that was so evocative terry, it just needed a picture of you in a cloth cap running across the cobbles clutching a hovis sandwich whilst the strains of dovorak's "new world symphony" played in the background.

Got it Howard. It was DCL, Distillers Co Ltd, part of United Yeast Company.
I think I have mentioned before about the cat falling in the doughnut fryer. The doughnuts have black hair in them for weeks after!
Happy days.

The baker's was at 4 and 5 Peter Street. Later on a second shop was taken over at 87 London Road (now Stuff) and staffed by relatives. Richard Gisby, my very young cousin was crawling about upstairs and pee'd on the floor. It dripped on to the counter below.
I must write my memoirs one day.

I had to go in there last week to pick up a leaflet to appeal against my reduction in pension which is on another thread (Reduction in OAP). I was pleasantly surprised as I had not been in there for over 13 years. I was greeted by a six feet six inch well dressed doorman who asked if he could help me. I asked for my leaflet and he immediately went to a stand, picked up my request and gave it to me saying "anything else you need sir". I was in and out in a couple of minutes.
Sorry Alexander, you have got me beat with your last post.

Alright, Alec, to explain: see the two previous posts to mine.
My point: if the elderly think so much of the young unemployed, then let it be clear that benefits are paid for, even if it comes from pension cuts.
Alec, I work 40 hours a week most weeks, and just manage to save £30 a week, and all this rather than sign on. It's peanuts! But rather that than signing on.
But Jan and Howard only expressed their opinion of the visitors to the job-centre, so I expressed mine.

I was not expressing an opinion I just could not think of the official name.
I have also had to get forms from there and found the staff very helpful.
