we always see vistors taking pics on the ferry of the cliffs when close to dover, i thought i would do the same thing on my last trip across.
you can see why people are so impressed, especially if it is the first time they have seen them.

Lovely snaps of the famous White Cliffs.
But it beggars the question whats the second thing the visitors see?

We live in an area with such fabulous natural beauty. We should cherish it.

they do get a nice view of the cliffs when they leave the eastern docks.
the problem is then the subway followed by the boarded up fountain and fallow plant troughs.

have to disagree keith, we have more open shops than most towns nowadays.
there is decay, my beef is with the market square bit, costs hardly any money to open the fountains and plant the troughs.
we have big money well spent on the promenade and the station, just needs the smaller things to be done well.

it's hard not to be negative,
i would love to see a thriving town centre, where people don't have to go out of dover to get what they need.
obviously in todays climate this isn't going to change sometime soon
the flowers in folkestone/hythe/sandgate look lovely
just a small touch but looks good

How negative, what about our beautiful new fencing the wonderful locals sitting outside Wetherspoons, proudly displaying their knowledge of the English language, the social gatherings in Pencester Gardens where the dog lovers love to meet and exchange pleasantries. Langdon Cliffs and the Western Heights both well know for doggies of a different kind at night.
Oh we have so much to offer not forgetting the block of ex council flats on the seafront which were modelled on those built in the old E.Germany and Poland.
Not all is as positive though for we have a collection of a number of ancient relics we can't even give away, they're called the Dover District Councillors.

that is my point keith, you rightly mention folkestone, sandgate and hythe.
the first two i saw last week, the array was stunning.
both towns were a riot of organised colour.
maybe we should ask the volunteer who does st mary's church to get down to market square?
Howard is right - it is the detail that counts. It isn't always about throwing money at things as much as about planning and using resources wisely. That, and making life Hell for the rogue landlords..........

don't get me on rogue landlords bern, was treated to a visit to a dangerous house today that our taxes pay the rent to a multi millionaire.
no further details of course, i wouldn't mess with this man and his friends.

There are some disgraceful landords, not just in the Priory area.
Money is easy for them, because no matter how bad the accommodation is, many from Eastern Europe still feel it is better than what they had back home.
Many English people don't complain very much either, although last year I had cause to visit a house in Clarendon Place where maggots were coming through the ground - and it was owned by a well known family of property owners/developers here.
If it was easy and cheap to find out who the landlords are, then we could contact them and enforce standards.
You can look at some houses and easily see which are rented and which are owner-occupied. The trouble is there are so many of them, it would take a long time and cost a lot of money.
Last week members of the Priory Forum walked the two alleyways between Malvern and Belgrave to assess the state of them in readiness for a clean-up; you couldn't believe how some people live.
