07:4288305And that is the case now Howard, but there's not many stalls that require electricity, but it is there - by kind permission of DTC I believe.
By the way Keith, the covers were to be green and white striped.
There was intended to be many more stalls than there has been so far and money to market the market (to new stall holders and the wider public too) was pledged.

11:0288317Having just mentioned we used to get the bus from Market Square on another thread the whole area would benefit if the bus still served that part of town.
I know I would venture down there as it is I have to get off the bus at Pencester and then walk, something my ankle no longer appreciates at all. I might even make it into Blakes.

11:5188323There is a bus that goes into Market square .Now served by Regency Coaches We battled hard for that service to go into Market Square .It comes through from Temple Ewell so I guess you could catch it at Fiveways ?
The idea being the Gateway Customer facilties ,Discovery Centre and of course our lovely Musuem could be accessed .
It then goes up to Howards neck of the woods .
Working for the people all the time Jan .Did you not see my photp when the service was lanched?

inerestingly the banner from the chamber of commerce taking the blame for it was not there.

Saturday Market Square has gone back from an oriental bazar to a Dovorian town centre.

Our Tilmanstone village market was bigger than that, this morning.

I have met with someone who wants to take over the Saturday market and he has some good ideas - he liked mine and I was pleased to hear his.
I have spoken to a Board member of Dover Chamber of Commerce who was quite keen to see it transformed into what it should be, but I have a strong feeling that the Chamber itself will be pleased to get rid of the responsiblity of running it.
This is quite surprising as it could, if run properly, bring in quite substantial sums and be a great benefit to Dover and the shops, residents and visitors.
The Channel Chamber are ambivilant, but would take it over if they had figures and projections on any costs and incomes.
Perhaps the chap I met with, could run it; I know what should be done to make it something Dover could be proud of, instead of embarrassed about.

interesting post roger, we ned someone with ideas and enthusiasm to kick start the market.
the first thing would be a definite shape to the thing rather than the ramshackle layout it was before and also the standardised colours that you originally mentioned

It can (and should) be done Howard, it's not rocket-science.

I am going to be a bit contentious do we really need a market, just because there was one in the past it does not mean we need one now.
Once upon a time street markets were the only source of cheap items now we have cheap shops that are selling the very goods that used to be the prerogative of market traders. A farmers market might be the way forward as they sell items not readily available in shops.

No, we don't need a market Jan - not the one we have at the moment anyway, but I feel strongly that a good, well-run market, with between 30 and 40 stalls would be very beneficial to the Town, the established businesses here (because of increased footfall) and the residents and visitors.
There is no reason why it couldn't be a success - for everyone; I have no idea why the current, responsible body for it can't/don't want to, run it as it should be run.
I have no problem with Farmers Market type of stalls and produce and would promote their inclusion.

And a well supported market will obviously help the shops nearby with trade.

A market would either take the trade fromt the shops nearby (Dover in general), or go bust because hardly anyone needs to shop there.
The market was a flop, let's face it!

The market as it was/is, is indeed a flop Alexander, but the whole point is, it needn't be.
Different people running it, a new market manager, different day perhaps and it would make an enormous difference.
The original idea was to have (in the main) stalls that are not replicating the shops, so it would do less/no damage to them.
Green and white striped covers, uniform sized stalls, a much more professional approach and not have people selling junk either.
If there enough people coming into Town (from neighbouring Towns and villages), it can and will create a much greater footfall for the shops as well.
Because it is a complete mess now, doesn't mean to say it will be a complete mess after the new team have taken over - far from it.
Do I write in invisible ink ? I have said all this a thousand times, is no one reading my posts ?

We're certainly reading your posts Roger and would hope to see a revival in the market. But lots of ideas like this just fail to take off here. Do you remember a while back a market idea was launched in Russell St Carpark.. a boot fair to end all boot fairs, but no one turned up!!
So people generally have had their optimism dented.

But that one didn't have any official permission Paul.
I approched DDC about the Market (before Cameron was involved) and they progressed it and paid for the planning permission and everything else. There is an agreement/licence between DDC and DCOC, but someone is breaking the conditions of their licence - and it isn't DDC !
