i believe that the land of the rising sun is stronger militarily than china, add to that the massive investment that japanese corporations have in china it would be folly to alienate the japanese.

I think you will find it is the other way round Howard, though of course it is all meaningless with the US sitting firmly on Japan's side.
The PRC is still communist in terms of politics, freedoms and civil liberties, though they have most definitely given up the old centralised command economy model for a much more liberal, capitalistic model .
