08:2687401The tories are hoping the big hike in VAT will raise £13 billion but some are warning because it will cost each of us £525 each year its in place, that people will spend less thus these saving won't be made.

08:4287406When VAT went down, I said it won't make that much difference to individual purchases; now it's going up by the same amount (2 1/2 %) I still don't think it will stop many people buying the things they want.

Because these times are tight for many people i believe this hike will hit people hard.
and people will hold back from spending in the hope that things may get better
but if this happens and the £13 bllion raised the govt will have to look elsewhere for cutbacks. but the govt has said this is there flagship rise

09:1087408So then Keith, given the scale of the structural deficit what taxes would you increase instead or what services would you cut instead?

09:2787410The domino effect of the VAT rise may well knock out any potential benefits, so it is a bit of a gamble. But sometimes gambles are all you have!

10:2887422No gamble at all Keith. The gamble was over the previous 13 years, gambling on a never ending boom with a massive spending and borrowing spree.
Personally I would prefer much deeper cuts than a tax rise.
Actually Brian - you are simply wrong about VAT - do some research and you will see we are far from the highest, Sweden, Denmark and Hungary for instance are 25%. Several countries including Ireland (now 21%) and Poland (now 22%) are increasing to 23%.

10:4787430i don't think it will hit shops badly, 2 and a half percent will hardly be noticed.
if someone is buying something for £.100 i don't think another £.2.50 will stop them.

10:5787435Struggling is sitting in a nail bar ,drinking in Costa Coffee .?I marvel how many people go into the many food outlets in Dover .Me I rarely visit a coffee shop Only if i need the toilet .
Yes going on the bus around St Radigunds is an eye opener but it is down to how the budget is spent .
Doesnt cost money to tidy up a garden or wash the curtains .
When I was a young Mum I could not afford to travel on a bus .I used to walk into town and when i n my forties I had my younger son i walked from River .

12:2387463It is more likely to become £104.99.

12:3587465More likely some will stay at £99.99 and some will go to £104.99 to balance out, that sort of repricing principle occurred when the VAT went down to 15% for a short while.

13:0187472As always, if I want something, I`ll buy it and won`t leave it just because of a few quid VAT added on. I`ve accepted any tax over the years as part and parcel of any elected government in power trying to raise money to make ends meet. It`s not the end of the world. Am I the typical silent majority or just an oddball?

13:2787484There were a lot of bargains in M & S and De Bradlei Wharf, I did well this year.
We obviously just have to accept raise in tax, and ' save money' in other ways - how about a new thread on How to Save Money?

13:2787485You are the silent majority Colin.

As you say if I need something I buy it, over my numerous years I have watched goods go up for various reasons by various governments and it has never stopped people buying what they need even when we had to save to buy them, unlike now.
This media hysteria about the vat rise will make no difference, it will be the same as when it was lowered to 15%. Who on this forum dashed out to buy something just because the cost went down by a couple of pence or pounds, I know there was no change at all to the way I spent my money.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

13:4387499Thank you Jan, though I don`t mind being an odd ball in most things. I`ll try and pay your shop a visit this week. I have some bags of goodies. KATH, not such a bad idea to start a thread on saving money.
