I have found the best way to deal with them is to be calm, polite, open and honest - this is the reaction they are least expecting - completely disarms them; after all I have nothing to hide and am always well within the rules etc. They always end up thanking me and wishing me well.

They show no evidence of a sense of humour. On one occasion we came back from Calais and were stopped and asked the question Why is your car left hand drive? It was like that when I bought it, I said. Big mistake, 45 minutes in the shed being gone over with a fine toothed comb. Miserable buggers, but at least they left the rubber gloves in the cupboard.
