I'm still not quite sure of your point, Jan.
Travelers sites are for travelers, Gypsies or not Gypsies.
All Gypsies are authentic, but a traveler doesn't have to be Gypsy. nor does a Gypsy have to be a traveler.
Most Gypsies live in stable houses and don't travel from place to place.
My point was, Britain should cater fairly for travelers who are British or Irish, but we do not have the possibilities to erect sites for a large influx of travelers from Eastern Europe.
These would swamp existing sites, or we would have to cut down our woodlands.
Each country should have sufficient facilities for their own nationals.

I've read Jan's posts before replying, Keith.
Incidentally, talking of Gypsies, I maintain that the vast majority of them do live in houses and are permanently settled down.
It's not true that most Gypsies, or any significant number of them, are travelers.
In Hungary there is a paramilitary organisation that goes around in uniform harassing Gypsies, entering their neighbourhoods, and chanting slogans against Roma and Jews.
These Hungarian Gypsies live in HOUSES, not tents or caravans.
It's not fair that some Eastern EU countries allow people to march around in uniform harassing Gypsies until they all pack up and flee to the UK.
Gypsies must have the right to live in their own country free of harassment.
The EU deliberately allows some of its eastern member states to persecute Romas with the intention of resettling them in the UK.
The gutless Government here does not say a word.

I don't have a lot of experience of Travellers except for what I see reported on the news. The filth and litter is enough for me. However, last year I went to look at a cottage for sale in a local rural village, expecting it to be in need of major repairs as it was so cheap. On arrival at the cottage in a lovely quiet area it was obvious it was in good order but then I turned around! Just yards away behind a 7ft mesh fence was what can only be described as a 'tip'. Caravans in total disarray, broken furniture, mattresses etc. strewn everywhere, filth, rubbish, dogs - everybody's neighbour(s) from hell. We left hurriedly and I later went on line and discovered that it was a designated Traveller site; the name of the co-ordinator was given with contact details. I would imagine to go on site you would have to be accompanied for your own safety whether you were a postman or the police. I later learned the elderly owner of the cottage was having to move to a Nursing Home but the likelihood of them ever selling the property let alone getting a fair price was pretty remote. If those whom made the rules or had designated the area for the site, had to live within yards of it, controls would be more vigorously enforced.

I was about to post something similar on the state of these sites Pauline. Just what taxes do these travellers pay to demand somewhere to live - income tax, council tax etc? In the part of France where I live travellers have their own designated areas in many towns and villages with WCs, showers etc. The sites are immaculately kept but they can only stay for three months and then have to move on. If they cause trouble they are evicted immediately by the gendarmes.

@Carole - I lived in France for a few years and found the same thing. Although there were always mutterings amongst the locals because of shop lifting and a rise in petty pilfering, no-one complained about the site which was huge but very well provided for. Each caravan had it's allotted space and on leaving, there was the biggest pile of loaded black sacks imaginable. Within 24hrs the site had been cleared by the authorities and was back to looking like parkland. It can be done but I have yet to see evidence of such well organised sites in the UK.

Where are they then Keith - I've not seen any.
There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

I think the best answer i can give is that of the KCC run travellers sites, which are well organised, and dont cause the problems that others have quoted on here.
maybe its the problem of the UNOFFICIAL sites that are a problem?
