TS Alert Information

TSI warns of a dangerous energy saving scam targeting the elderly.
Further to previous alerts regarding power save devices, the above image is an example of one such device.
To re-iterate the previous message:-
Trading Standards Institute is urging consumers to be aware of rogue telephone cold callers offering energy saving devices after trading standards up and down the country reported hundreds of complaints.
Trading standards have had a number of the items tested which not only failed to satisfy electrical safety standards but do not deliver any tangible energy savings.
Ron Gainsford from the Trading Standards Institute said:
"Consumers are warned not to use the product as they pose a risk of fire and electrocution and a safety recall has been issued for the items traced so far."
Advice to consumers
If consumers have responded to one of these cold calls they should report the matter to Action Fraud on www.actionfraud.org.uk 0300 123 2040 or Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06. They should also contact their bank to stop their debit/ credit card. If a device has been received they should not use it and dispose of it carefully.
Consumers should be cautious about giving out any personal or financial information. Kent Trading Standards have become aware of a problem affecting the Argos Nodding Reindeer Silhouette Christmas Decoration.

ARGOS Important Safety Notice Product Safety Warning
ARGOS NODDING REINDEER SILHOUETTE CHRISTMAS DECORATION
CATALOGUE NUMBER 269/9189
It is possible that the product may suffer an electrical fault leading to a potential risk of electric shock when the handling the product in use.
Please could you STOP USING the product immediately and return the product to your nearest Argos store where you will be given a full refund.
This safety notification only affects the Argos Nodding Reindeer sold between 1st October 2010 and 28th November 2011. No other Argos products are affected by this recall.
We wish to thank you for your co-operation and apologise for any inconvenience.

Kent County Council Trading Standards are warning consumers to be on their guard after seizing over 300 unsafe "novelty" lighters from retail premises in the county.
The lighters (see picture below) were in various forms many of which would be appealing to children. None of them have the required child resistance feature to stop children accidentally starting fires.
This type of lighter is banned from sale to reduce the number of injuries and deaths caused by house fires started by children playing with lighters.

The following notice has been issued by the retailer:
Tesco product recall
Tesco Halogen Heater 1200W and 1600W.
After a detailed investigation Tesco is recalling the above Halogen Heaters as a precautionary measure. This follows an isolated incidence of a house fire caused by an identical product sold by another retailer.
What you should do:
If you have purchased one of these heaters please return it to your nearest Tesco Extra or Superstore where you will be given a full refund

I worked very well for about four hours then failed completely. I checked the fuse which was OK so, having unfortunately discarded the till receipt, I thought that was it.
On seeing Paul's posting I phoned the Tesco helpline (five options - none of which apply - hold for an operator - here we go (yawn) - not so! - instant response! ). A very helpful lady called Laura checked my postcode and the product, informing me that they can identify it as one of their lines by a Tesco sticker on the back, and even without the till receipt Tesco would reimburse in full.
Tesco Clubcard customers (I am not) are informed of recalls by E-Mail or post.

14 December 2011 15:22142350be carefull when you vist canterbury and thanet areas,aparently there are fake £20 notes being passed around.apparently there has been thousands of pounds worth has allready been handed in to the police by inocent people and buisness.

KCC's Trading Standards Officers are warning householders not to let stormy weather become a rogue trader's Christmas bonus!
News and weather reports this week suggest Kent may feel the effects of stormy, cold, weather and strong winds. Rogue traders are likely to latch on to this and suggest to home owners that repairs are necessary when they are not, or to charge extortionate sums for minor repairs. These rogue traders will often cold call. Previous examples of this type of con have included roof repairs and making trees safe.
They may even try and tell you that you can claim back for the work via your insurance company. DON'T BE FOOLED.
If your property is damaged by the weather you should contact your insurance company FIRST and follow their advice.
Kent Trading Standards advise consumers to be wary when dealing with traders at their door. Consider carefully whether you do want the goods or services offered.
In most cases if you agree to buy anything costing over £35 from a trader at your door, the law gives you a 7 day "cooling off" period to change your mind. The trader must give you a written cancellation notice if you agree to have any work done. Failure to give this notice is a crime.
If you are considering work in or on your property it is always best to get at least a couple of quotes from traders. You can find reputable traders on the "Buy With Confidence" good trader scheme run by us. Our officers vet all traders on the scheme for trustworthiness and to ensure they comply with consumer protection laws. Or, ask for recommendations from friends or family.
