Just because places are different doesn't mean we cannot learn from them.

For me the lessons here are:
    a) Proper community engagement and involvement
    b) A clear unity of purpose (e.g. single website portal for all the shops)
    c) Encouraging independent traders
    d) Creating an evening economy

All of these are things are equally applicable to the 3 distinct shopping areas in Dover, namely, the "high street/old town" (Market Square to Maison Dieu), The High Street (Ladywell to Bridge Street) & London Road.

(I have ignored St James as this is frankly another fairly uninspiring me too open air shopping mall that can be found the length and breadth of the UK and in no way shouts Dover or even visit me to anyone)

Each of these has a slightly different offer and client base and they must not lose these differences as this is what gives each a chance to stand out and "make a name" for themselves. However to survive they need to ensure that they understand what their community wants and endeavour to provide it whilst at the same time linking with the other 3 areas to maximise opportunities.
