Very good article page 3 by Andrew Stucken. He quite rightly states that the new leisure centre at Whitfield is not easy to get to by Public transport.Stagecoach provide a good PR exercise but fail to state in the afternoon some of the services are cut .The walk from Tesco is a good ten minutes. .
I gather the car park at the new centre was packed yesterday ..
The new centre has been several years in planning .Surely a good discussion re public transport links should have taken place .

Maybe Stagecoach will divert a service direct to the leisure centre in the same way they rerouted the 62 to Market Square to serve St James. Unfortunately Whitfield was the only option due to no suitable site in town.

Yes Whitfield was probably the only site availabel however DDC and Stagecoach should have had a closer look at their routes and timings. One an hour from River and not during the afternoon .If they ran the service from River via Crabble Hill then you could change buses up to Whitfield as I did for years .

I guess that's village bus services for you!
I think I'm right in saying that the name of the road outside the centre is... Fitness Fields.
(Not my real name.)

Unfortunately there actually were a number of viable sites much closer to town, but in some cases the owners weren't keen on selling, in others there was the fear of the "building on a flood plain" brigade kicking off again and of course none were available as a land swap with a friendly developer/land banker...

I think what Andrew was implying and myself to a certain extent Stage Coach needs to reconsider its bus services ..Maybe the new centre is geared for young people but I know a lot of elderly people who enjoy swimmming.

Wherever it was built there would be those who would have preferred it near them, personally I do not mind but at least it is easier to get to for those living in the Deal direction.

What we have to remember is that the Whitfield site is owned by DDC so if they had purchased land elsewhere there would have been less to spend on the facilities there.

Rubbish Howard. Always follow the money. All will become clear. Were Dover to have rock the name CityCorps Developments would run through it. Just saying.

As I said a cosy land swap between DDC & their preferred land banking developer, where DDC got some fairly cheap land at Whitfield and their pals got a prime development spot on the main road into the docks. Fair trade apparently...

It would have been a simple matter to drive a hard surfaced foot/cycle path through to Melbourne Avenue along the boundary fence of the school. It would come out right by a bus stop and would take no more than 2 minutes to walk it. No need to divert other bus services then. No joined-up thinking going on in DDC as far as I can see.

Totally agree with this. Even posted about it.

quote #103 report
Looking at google maps it shows how close the site is to Melbourne Avenue.

It looks to me that a proper path should be put in to link up with new Leisure Centre. (And then improve the footpath down to Green Lane).howard mcsweeney1 likes this

I can't think of anything that DDC have been involved in which has been a success.
