After a year of collecting beer scores and nearly two months of judging we can announce the winner of our Branch Pub of the Year 2012 competition: The Berry, Walmer.
This is a record 5th time in a row that Chris Barnes, landlord of The Berry, has won this award, beating the Mogul, Dover, now closed, which won the award four times in a row.
CAMRA's Pub of the Year competition recognises all the criteria that make for a great pub: atmosphere, decor, welcome, service, value for money, customer mix, support for CAMRA's aims but most importantly, the quality of their beer.
Praise should also go to the landlords at the Carpenter's Arms, Coldred, The Red Cow, Sandwich and The Ship Inn, Deal, who were all nominated for this competition. Being nominated reflects on the high-quality of real ale that is served in their pubs.
- so it's the Carpenters Arms for the shortest walk home!

It's not only the fabric of a pub but the people that run it that is lost. Jeanette will be missed.
As for the swimmers signatures and times, what's the problem. It certainly added to the character of the place and hard-wired to the locality. What do people want? flock wall paper? Now that would be a distraction.
The trade is extremely difficult and other than free houses, people find it almost impossible with greedy owners/breweries upping the rent every time any sign of profit is demonstrated. I often think that a certain local brewery's product is actually 'landlords' rather than 'ale' (in this case even the term ale is questionable).
I think Paul's good beer guide is accurate, although the Eight Bells should be removed on the basis that they have killed off town centre pubs. Yes they sell real ale but is it a pub? Pubs are a place to drink, talk and learn, not just a place to get drunk cheaply. Beer is one thing but you can drink it at home, pubs are something special. Wetherspoons premises are vacuous holes, the manifestation of everything wrong with market-forces. Support Tim Martin and you support the demise of the British pub. Drink less and opt for atmosphere
The Red Lion and The Louis are great. Deal is spoilt for choice: The Berry, The Just Reproach (the way forward for pubs), The ship...in fact most of them.

It's our favourite pub as it sells decent ale, has great food, has the best beer garden in Dover, excellent staff, dog friendly..........I could go on forever. When friends and family visit they all insist we go for a beer there. I like the writing on the walls too. It shows amazing achievements.
On a slightly selfish tack, where are we going to take all our old books now? Ross, do you have an alternative depository as there are probably several hundred books ready and waiting. We had a few cracking Doverforum parties, one of MrB's special birthday parties
and I seem to recall one for the lovely Mary Graham when she left the Mercury.
I like the swimming signatures and dates all over the wall, for me it works. The fact that its right next to my shop obviously lends itself.. but at the same time...

Sure someone will want to take on the challenge. - 1 September 2012 17:47189451A shame to lose such an asset to Dover, The White Horse has a very interesting history not only being used by channel swimmers from all over the world to record their times for all to see, but also in the distant past I believe it was used for autopsies or used for souls bodies lost at sea.

I didn't get to finish it, as a uniformed gentleman came in and said we all had to go home ! 10minutes after closing time. I think it was half past ten in those days.
When Charlie was landlord he used to clean all the pipes and pumps on a sunday morning. The ale served from 12.00 until 14.30 was perfect. Then of course we had to go home again. - Jan Higgins

2 September 2012 22:19189602I know this is going to sound hard but many pubs with historical interest have closed in the last twenty years, the White Horse is no different to any of those. If those that have posted here and are so sad it is closing had used it more often it might still be a thriving business, memories are useless businesses need the hard cash.
I really feel for Jeanette after so much struggling to keep the place going only to loose not only her income but her home as well, I wish her luck for the future.-----------------------------------------------------------------------
