12:1070083Wellington Dock with the Calais-Douvres II
"A fine view of the Wellington Dock about 1899 with the successful paddle-steamer Calais-Douvres II, not to be confused with the twin-hulled cross-channel steamer of the same name. In the foreground is the schooner Erme squeezed alongside.
The Calais-Douvres made her inaugural crossing on 31 May 1889, and was in service in the Channel for eleven years before leaving Dover about 1900 to begin another successful spell of service operated by the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company under her new name Mona. She was capable of twenty knots and is believed to have been the first cross-channel ferry lit throughout by electricity. Her bow shows clearly the London Chatham and Dover Railway Company crest.
The older and much smaller paddler, the Calais, in service from 1896 o 1916 is alongside. Later renamed the Au Revoir, she was sunk by a U boat in 1916.
The Grand Shaft barracks re clearly shown on the cliff top, and squeezed among the quayside public houses to the right is the sailmaker sign of ships' chandlers Sharp and Enright."

15:5970115You`re right Ed, and also I would imagine that the area would be off limits to the general public. I`ll email the publisher tomorrow, as it`s only just been published, and see where they got the year from. The book does mention alot of the picture`s either have a date or location, and some picture`s are contradictory. A bombed `Schools` class locomotive shown at Deal, has been reported in the past as being at Ramsgate. Anyway, I`ll keep you posted.......... Kath, another fine picture thank you.

16:5670119Hmm, naming a ship 'Mona' eh? Seems appropriate when you considers ships are all 'she'.

20:1571208 Been looking for your picture Ian. I took this one of the Ross Revenge 10 April 1992, when the chaps on board took a group of us from the ferry office round on a guided tour. I`ve got an audio tape at home with a recording of Radio Caroline broadcasting that evening, and playing a request for the wife`s favourite song from our courting days. Did anybody else tune into Caroline when it was broadcasting in the Dover area in the early 90s?

21:1571229Colin, I was Radio Essex and or Radio London man myself. I, like most young folks at the time, would listen to Radio Luxemburg, hopefully without the parents finding out. I switched Caroline when it first started but then moved to the other two.
As I recall, Screaming Lord Sutch also had a pirate station on one of the Thames forts but I can't remember it's name or listening to it.
Exciting days to be a teenager.

21:3671236My eldest sister had radio luxemburg on all the time in the early sixties Sid, and I still remember the jingle, though it`s never appeared on youtube, (maybe no recording exists?). I remember radio Caroline and radio London back in the sixties and still enjoy the main jingle on youtube, along with the Caroline jingle. Great days indeed. Do you or anyone else on here remember the Danger Man tv episode about a pirate radio station? Haven`t seen it since the mid sixties, though I have seen many other one`s in recent times.

22:5571272Colin - your picture, I presume this ship was one of the Grimsby trawlers belonging to Ross Group?

16:1971462Yes, it was Kath, and looking on the internet without a pile of information, briefly, it was built for Icelandic fisheries in 1960, and after three years, it was bought by Ross for use at Grimsby, and proved to be the most successful of any British trawler. It was rescued from the scrapyard in 1980 for use as the new radio Caroline broadcasting vessel.
