20:3490469yes the thorny subject returns.
who will run them and how many will stay open?
according to the "mercury" today, two are likely to close permanently, buckland bridge and those behind the town council offices.
the same report went on to say that negotiations are taking place that will allow residents to use facilities in private establishments.
i doubt that the ladywell ones will be missed, always in a bad state, because of their position an easy target for vandals.
it must be a year since the storm over the original closures and it is still not known who will run our conveniences in future.

20:4590476There is uproar in my town of Enniscorthy in Ireland about the recent "behind closed doors" decision to close 50% (ie 1) of the public loos here. And the one that is projected to remain is horrible: one of those "automatic" ones, and it is right next to the busiest roundabout in Enniscorthy! Most people pay for a coffee in a cafe (of which there are plenty) and use the loo there. The automatic loos are scary! But the loos are running at a loss, so to speak, and the council has spoken!

20:4690477I do not agree Howard the ones in Ladywell are used the most, and they are also clean the ones at the Buckland Bridge have been close now for somtime. But the ones in the town need to stay open and if the D.D.C. close them, that will cost a lot of votes in May and so it should, the town centre without toilets will keep even more of the public away.I say again why ,why, do you keep voting the same old mob in. The ones in DEAL WILL STAY

OPEN

20:5190478It is over a year and the Buckland Bridge ones have been closed for a while, the ones at Maison Dieu which are in the centre of town are so run down and in such a poor state that they would need too much money to be spent on them to make them worthwhile. The Stembrook ones as I understand it will be taken over by the Town Council and the mix and match idea is to allow people to use some of the shops.
Some of the shops were keen and I can remember talking to Hadyn when he had the Salle Verte he said he would welcome the use by the public for 2 reasons,1.He would get money from the Council,2 people going in to use the facilities may be tempted to stay and buy something.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

20:5690479I posted before I saw Vics posting and I think he ir right,I led the campaign to get the Public Toilets open again, the ones that Sandwich Town Council bought off DDC actually they recieved a grant of about £40,000 to take them over I believe no doubt Paul Watkins will correct me if I am wrong, that it will cost the present administration votes, but lots of people that use them are visitors as well, and the ones at Maison Dieu are not giving Dover a pleasing Visitors attraction.

21:0790481i think john is right about the maison dieu/ladywell bogs, they are too far gone to throw more money at.
i am still of the opinion that a charge could be made to use the facilities in an attempt to defray expenses and keep them in good order.
deal and sandwich town councils have managed to reach agreement on running them, as far as i know dover town council have yet
to follo suit.
paul the fuhrer stated on here some time ago that d.d.c. had made a recommendation to them.

21:0990482I know that the loos or lack of in Wexford and Enniscorthy do put off visitors, in a major way. Wexford is big enough to suck it up and has the Opera House as well as lots of other attractions with their own loos to make up for it a bit. Smaller towns (such as Dover.....) don't have the same luxury.

21:1690485No decisions on closures other than Buckland Bridge [many months ago] and the one opposite the Water Sport centre which always shuts during the winter, both have been well reported.
We are still in discussions with Dover Town Council following their public consultation.
A solution looks promising.
I am sure when agreement is confirmed both Councils will want to make a joint statement.
Sorry not one for your campaign leaflet Vic.

21:1790486We have been to Wexford and Enniscorthy Bern, had our honeymoon in Arklow co.Wicklow, went to Vale of Avoca and bumped into Terry's Coach tour from Deal!!Just what we needed on honeymoon as the coach was full of people from Eastry and I knew half of them, best place around there was Glendaloch.Love that Terry Wogan programme on Ireland really makes it look good.

21:2390488That made me laugh - meeting familiar faces on honeymoon has to be a bit of a blip!! You can see the Wicklow Hills from my parents house, and the Blackstairs Mountain. I have told my kids many tales about Fionn mac Cumhaill, sometimes when we were actually on the Blackstairs!

22:4290502If the ones in the very centre of Dover at Maison Dieu are to close how about making the facilities in the old library available to the public. It is a Town Council building so should be suitable.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

08:4290510I don't think that's an option Jan.
I do thinik there is an argument for someone (Dover Chamber of Commerce's Business Support Manager perhaps ?) asking "appropriate" businesses if they would, in principle, allow their toilet facilities to be used by the public.
If not the Chamber's man, then perhaps the TC could utilise some of the young people at the LSBC centre where I work; they could promote Fair-trade in Town and ask about the toilets and any other useful initiatives or functions that the DTC officers don't have the time to do.
Many things could be done by these very enterprising and intelligent young people. It's a free resource.
