"If upheld on appeal"
There's the rub.
I have noticed that on these very pages threads have begun warning/encouraging compliance with the law concerning Tax-Returns.
When those in receipt of benefits and pensions 'fail to comply' through no particular fault of their own the 'justice' meted out to them is no different than this tax case, is it?
Here we have an accountant, no less, pleading, "it worn't me m'lud wot done it".
Well no, Mr. Accountant, you certainly did not do as you were obliged to do.

I have no sympathy with businesses big or small that do not get their returns in on time, unless there is a very good reason to be late. Having said that it is completely wrong that HMRC are waiting so long before telling the firms and fining them, what a nice little money earner for them.

seems to me like a cash cow for government, they wouldn't get away with it against the conglomerates.

They don't bother with the conglomerates Howard, they're too busy having dinner with them.
It is completely unfair that they hound small businesses, but not big companies.

Well expressed there Peter. A little sad, fraught with...um....'technicalities', but on time.

But who is the tongue and Mr. Glum aimed at ?
The last piece on that article sums up many small businesses difficulties and also applies to individuals:
"In the past you had tax inspectors who had the power to look at a case and make a reasonable and fair decision. But now you're left dealing with call centres where nobody takes ownership of an issue."

Do you mean the new flower-shop Keith ? The one that sells fruit and veg too ?
Does she have a problem with HMRC or business support ?

i read that article, why the big surprise at the rent and business rate?
she would have known that prior to opening the shop.

I agree Howard. So it is the new shop ?
Business rates and rent have nothing to do with HMRC though.

The Valuations department, a department of HMRC set the rateable value while the rate per pound of RV is set by the Treasury.

'Rates' is a misnomer as the word implies you get something in the way of services for your money. It's purely a tax on business.

The lady would surely have known what the business outgoings would be prior to opening if Keith means the new shop.

You are right Jan, she certainly should have done a business plan and considered things like costs and cashflow. That said she should make contact with the Chamber as our Chief Exec has a lot of experience helping out businesses on such matters. I will pass this on accordingly.
