Yes, even I with my total disinterest in sport, watched it and yes it certainly was.
We can be proud of the show the organisers put on for the world and well done to everyone involved.

I thought the idea of showing our history was great although a bit long winded and boring at times. There was no way we could compete with the Beijing spectacular so we had to go for something entirely different. We succeeded in doing our thing extremely well.
The best bits for me were the forged rings, the cauldron petals going up to form the Olympic flame and the James Bond sketch with the Queen.
The worst was Macca who made me cringe, to think he has the nerve to think he can still sing.

What about Mr Bean? - that was a surprise and a great laugh. Agreed about Macca though. I have to say that I did not find the 'history bit' at all boring, simply because there was so much going on and so much to spot.

others that were commentators/athletes from other countries were asked if they understood what was going on throughout and many answered no
it was a very good display, well put together a lot of detail

the ending with the rings was fantastic

beijing was spectacular but our one was more about people that have made our history.
i switched off when paul mcc came on, never been a fan at the best of times but i can see why he was deemed to be vital to the show.

courtesy of the independent, i think this rent a mouth watched a different ceremony to everyone else.
A Tory MP insisted today that he had been misunderstood after sparking a major backlash by branding the Olympic opening ceremony "leftie multicultural crap".
Aidan Burley, who was forced to quit as a ministerial aide after attending a Nazi-themed stag do last year, delivered the barbs on Twitter during the event last night.
One post read: "The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen - more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Welfare tribute next?"
Shortly afterwards he added: "Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multicultural crap. Bring back red arrows (sic), Shakespeare and the Stones!"
The tweets caused an avalanche of criticism on the social networking site, including from fellow Conservative Gavin Barwell.
"AidanBurleyMP with respect, us Londoners are rather proud of the diversity of our city £nothingleftwingaboutit," the Croydon MP posted.

What a plonker Aidan Burley must be. With the subject matter it was bound to be about the working classes being portrayed rather than the industrialist owners (those in the top hats) who provided the brains and money for the industrial revolution to happen.

i have not heard anyone say anything bad about the ceremony, even the most cynical people i know begrudgingly admitted that it was great.

I watched until Bond made an appearance. The 'forging' of the rings was well put together. (I had skipped the opportunity to hear sundry talking heads prior to the opening.)
The 'theme' is beyond description;hand-jiving Cpn Ahabs and all.
I am bemused by the (extensive) use of video material. Why not show 'She', and/or 'Metropolis' and have done with it?
And, to cap it all my local offy was full of 'not probably-the-best-lager-in-the-world', but I persevered.
Bottoms-up for the Olympics!
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

I thought a better group would have been an improvement, like Roger says. But we can't all like everything !
But a tremendous lot of imaginative planning had gone into it and such a variety of subjects and displays, maybe a bit too dependent on the videos.
But overall, an amazing spectacle which will no doubt long be remembered. Congratulations to the planners and those who took part - it was splendid and breathtaking.

Stayed up until the end and thoroughly enjoyed it, 4.30 up for work was not so enjoyable

The German VIP giving the Nazi salute was a disgrace. Great Britain showed the rest of the world we can put a show on.
