Going off at a tangent when in Italy in the late 70s there was always a shortage of coins although plenty of 50 lira notes going around worth about 2p each. Most people paid fares on buses by coins and the drivers never emptied them. It came as a surprise to be given a toffee as change in a bar sometimes.
