If the BBC's TV is bad it's because it's chased the ratings of commercial channels by aping them rather than standing up for distinction. Its news is fine, its documentaries are largely bland and unimaginative, with the odd exception, and as far as drama is concerned it lost its nerve in the 80s, soon after it produced its last great piece of work, The Singing Detective.

But I am happy to pay my my licence fee just to keep the BBC out of the grubby, sweaty palms of the world's Murdochs. That doesn't mean I'm happy that it ends up funding Evans' fleet of classic cars rather than producing programming of quality. But that's the commercial, competitive imperative at work: instead, the BBC should be setting the standard.

Its radio, though, has to be the best in the world, and that's just 3 and 4.
