Well on the face of it, it looks like a good idea..grow our own oil in the gallopingly vast wheatfields of Kansas and be self sufficient, and we wont need to depend on those nasty foreign types who have oil spouting out of their floral rockeries in the back gardens of the middle east. Yes sounds good doesnt it.

But hold on. If all those wheatfields of the vast American plains are turned over to oil, what becomes of our food supply? Hard pressed farmers, well they always say they are hard pressed, will get more if they turn their fields over to oil production instead of food production. Food is a relatively cheap resource (or was), oil is big money. So its a no brainer..all the commodities will go into oil production and to hell with cheaper food option. Of course wheat growers around the world will also want a piece of the gravy train action and the result.... Food will become the next oil. Many foods of the breadbasket cheaper variety, life's sustainers, will become rarer than your grannies teeth. Cattle cannot be fed either so meat will become too expensive for ordinary consumers as the alternative feeds will be hugely more expensive.

Now a group of MPs, as I understand it, want the government to stop their support for Bio Fuels before its too late. But Gordon Brown's government is not listening..so whats new there? Not much, as they cannot make their mind up over anything til the fat hits the fryer and then its way too late. As I said...nothing new there.

But surely this is the world shooting itself in the foot with a giant sized torpedo. Fixing the oil shortage perhaps, but scuppering everything else. The baby will really go out with the bathwater this time.
