23:0572211Excellent news on the common sense front.
Apparently a Job Centre has suggested to a heavily tattooed and pierced female client that she might consider putting a bag over her head if job hunting.

Let's hope that the boss of Stena will withdraw his pathetic apology of earlier in the week when he explained that he was hiring Filipino crew as British seamen were overweight and tattooed

08:4672230what a great start to the day, laughed my socks off.
the best bit for me was after the clerk had supposedly said "no offence intended".
i reckon she made it all though.
i wonder how many jobcentre staff would actually like to say that?

09:3072242I remember chatting to someone at the station,he said just been for another job interview, can't understand why I can't get a job! I wondered if the fact he had S**t tatooed on his forehead had anything to do with it.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

09:3272245JHG - have you sent an email to us about a hacker? I am a bit worried as I opened one that seemed to be from you.

10:0572253There is no reason tattoos or piercings should affect the candidate's ability to do a job unless there are elf 'n safety issues with dangly bits or unless the tattoos are really gross.
Our charming and capable Lady Mayor, Cllr Sue Jones, is a case in point.

10:5872262Yes indeed Peter our Lady Mayor herself is an illustrated woman. Here is a pic that shows all or almost all...
and with lots of sexy curves happening too. She seems to have no problem or encountered no problem and she is doing rather well as Mayor...
However as was said earlier by JHG, there are tattoos and tattoos, if you had SH*T stamped on your forehead it might seriously hamper your future participation in a role regarding a good and worthwhile contribution to society.

10:5872263many companies insist on all candidates having no visible tattoos, particularly if facing the public.

10:5972265You must be more tolerant than I would be, Peter.
I would hate to be served by someone covered in tattooes and body piercing, image is all important when dealing with the public. The only job she is suitable for is one where her image does not matter, in other words well out of sight.

11:0072266I have a tattoo myself - won't say where! I don't have a problem with tattooes or even some piercings, but if we choose to have them we also need to recognise that they might impact on peoples perceptions of us.

11:2972277I can relate to both sides of the story. I have 10 tattoos and a few piercings. I worked for the Job centre (then DSS) if I had said anything like that to someone I would have been joining them on the other side of the desk!
I wasn't allowed to have any visible tattoos, wear jeans or clothes with large logos on when dealing with the public (or in most behind the scenes jobs.) Ironically I was a fraud investigator for several years and people used to relate to me more when they could see some of my tattoos if I wore short sleeves. I would 'blend in' better wearing jeans and a t shirt. I got more 'confessions' that way than I did in a suit!
I now work for myself and can wear what I like and look how I like. I added a small visible tattoo to my wrist last year - I'm such a rebel!!
I sometimes appear in newspaper and magazines articles and on one occasion last year was asked to change into a long sleeved top for the photo shoot so my tattoos wouldn't be visible in case I upset anyone. I did but afterwards I wondered if I should have? The photo was to accompany an interview about me, it wasn't for an advertisement or client which I could have appreciated as they normally tell me what (not) to wear or provide something.

11:5872287I caught an episode of Come Dine With Me this week (OK, I know...)
It was a celebrity version with a well known former page 3 model (can't remember her name) covered in tatoos. She is an extreme case, I have to say. From a pic in her dining room I suspect she only had her body mutilated after her career.
She looked terrible, horrible and she was moaning that she can't find a man, no wonder. Lembit Opik seemed interested in her though but then he would and probably did not look anywhere other than at her (false) cleavage....a man easily satisfied clearly.
I have to say, I do not like tatoos. But, yes they dont necessarily mean anything about the ability to do a job. Glamour modelling is one no-no though and I certainly would not employ a tatood woman in a client facing role.
That said, regarding the earlier post, I do like Sue...

12:4972289I guess it is all about perceptions. My Tattoo isn't visible (most of the time...I was very young when I had it done, and it was still "edgy" back then - it's ten a penny now ), and I suppose I reserve the right to have a tattoo anywhere I damn well please (!) but that doesn't mean I can be offended if people don't like it. On that principle, I am appalled when I see young nurses with nail varnish and earrings on duty. For many reasons including infection control it's a no-no, but even just regarding public perceptions it's inappropriate.

13:1972291Was it Jodie Marsh Barry? She lives near me.

I met her for the first time 3 years ago and despite any pre conceived ideas I (shouldn't have) had, she was lovely. I read that she is going to be on a TV programme about learning how to tattoo.

13:4272295Yes it was Jeanne.
We live in a free society one can do what one wants with "mutilating" your body but you have to be responsible for the result . Its just as free for anyone to object.
Dont complain if your preferences affect your future and prospects.
My Father had a tattoo done when he was in the Army and hated it for the rest of his life. The problem is you cant take em off easily if you change your mind.
...and BTW I think Sue is gorgeous!!!

13:5072297I used to work in an agency supplying casual labouring staff and we had no problem taking on people with tattoos, most of the time. However, when a gentleman walked in with a bat symbol tattooed across his face we had to turn him down as we could not think of a single client we could send him too.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

Yes it was indeed Jodie Marsh.
Below is a picture of her, she must have had a lot more tatoos since this was taken as I cannot find one that really shows the full horror of how she looked on CDWM. Mind you it does give you an idea of what Lembit was attracted to...
