The Prussians prevented tens of thousands of French troops reaching the battlefield, and managed to join forces with the British and compel the French to retreat.
And since Waterloo, Britain and France have been allies.
So, alliances are important, and by looking at history, we can appreciate how important they can be. They can prevent defeats, and prevent wars breaking out.
Let's not forget what happened in Singapore, where an - allied - army of well over 100,000 men surrendered to the Japanese, who numbered about 30,000. Yes the white flag was raised!

Paul, there was me thinking that the Napoleonic defences were built before the Napoleonic Wars, which ended in 1815. And there was me thinking further that in 1854 The Light Brigade effected the charge in Crimea which brought them to world fame, and the Thin Red Line halted the onslaught of the Russian Heavy Brigade.
Oh, almost forgot to mention, the French were fighting side by side with the British in Crimea.

These factors convinced him that Britain's coastal defences were inadequate to prevent invasion by Napoleon III if the Royal Navy was lured elsewhere."Been nice knowing you :) - 18 February 2012 18:26154241There was no plan on the French part to invade, Paul, so the concerns were not due to a state of enmity, but rather a sense of suspicion on the part of Lord Palmerston, who then instigated the Royal Commission, causing unnecessary expences.
Later, Britain and France stipulated an official alliance which banned once and for all any risk of a war. The Entente Cordiale.
