  The trouble is, Barry, he would appear to have broken the ministerial code of conduct. He is doing DC and the Tory party no favours by dragging it out. I really can't see that his defence expertise is good enough to go out on a limb for; Fox ought to do the decent thing and perhaps come back to Cabinet later. After all, Mandelson got out of worse scrapes and came back....again.....and again.....
  
  The media are beginning to sniff Major-style sleaze and that has to be stopped at all costs as it taints the government as a whole, not just the individuals in it. Facts may be inconvenient to those with the blood scent but it's perceptions which make the Westminster scene go round.
