Off the yahoo page from Tyneside is this popular idea for the revamping of derelict building`s.
Artificial shops! SORRY, just spotted that this had been included on another posting by PaulS.

Ah Colin, spotted this in the Telegraph today.
Having said that the London Road Community Forum are ahead of the game here having painted a mural on one shop on the High Street already and have funding from various sources to do more. They are working with DDC and landlords to identify properties that they can do this to, though the next one is likely to feature the winning photo or photos in a locla photo competition.

I've attended these meetings with the Mayor and various artists, as Dover Business Support Manager.
This could help enormously to make the Town look less run-down until the shops are taken up.
They should be having another meeting soon.

We could have Harrod`s in Dover, where the pound shop was.

Could indeed Colin, but it would cause a lot of frustration when people can't find the door to get in.

Another problem as well Roger, if the paint job is good, the poor sighted may start walking past the real one`s thinking they`re murals.

He, He, will be fun watching the shoplifters trying to bag a few loose items!
Oh Boy!, That'll be the day.........

Should be a lot easier BuddyG, just scrape the items of the wall.

Just to confirm Ross's statement, as LRCF secretary I am working on a local photo-competition involving the community that should brighten up a shop window or two. I won't say any more just now as it's early days, but I think the committee have all agreed to it once a suitable location can be determined.
Excellent news!

Serious on this one, but what about that No 10 in the Market Square, with two policeman either side of the door? Ross, I was going to visit your London Road area to grab a picture to get on here and forgot all about it. I`ll make an effort to get up there this week. Spend too much time passing them shop`s by in the motor.

I welcome Phil's words, but looking back at the photo in post #1, have you ever seen anything quite so sad in all your life? Window shopping in a non-existent shop?
Before you know it, DDC will be painting in 'virtual' toilets!!

Colin - I think I heard that No 10 is being looked at for a relocated tourist information.....
Been nice knowing you :)

That would be an ideal position there Paul, so near the subway, and at least a start. I walked up as far as Beaconsfield early this afternoon, and I was appalled at the closed shops and the state of deterioration of it all. First time I`ve really looked up there in year`s. I`m quite surprised that Turner`s the model shop has survived for so many year`s. I used to get my WW2 Airfix fighter plane kits in there back in the mid 60s.

I know the London Road people won't like it, but I am sure the best thing to regenerate and improve the town would be to let the properties from the Eagle upwards revert back to housing as it used to be long ago and to be able to concentrate the 'town' nearer the centre. Rates and property prices would probably stop this from happening.
For those that know Ramsgate, King Street has had quite a few properties converted back to accomodation.
Been nice knowing you :)
Good idea Scotchie, but too obvious to get anywhere.

I know quite a few of the LRCF crowd, and I have to say that I find them open to suggestions of any sort, just so long as the effect is to improve the area. They're quite nice people, on the whole!

I've not heard that one Paul (Scotchie); my understanding is that the new VIC location is in Castle Street.
It is of course true Andy that the LRCF people are a great bunch of very enthusiastic people concerned with improving the area.
The suggestion about reverting the small businesses back to residential has been raised before and there must be many instances where that could be the case; it would then bring most of the business back nearer the centre of Town and give them a better footfall - wouldn't it ?

In principle reverting properties back to residential on the lower part of London Road near the Eagle is a fair proposal as it will improve the area; the kicker is likely to be the level of cost increases involved in shops being closer to the town centre. All vibrant towns centres have ample secondary shopping locations (Union Street in Maidstone springs to mind) for independent and niche retailers, over the years this is something that London Road has provided for the town; so unless a comparable location is available closer into the centre (Worthington Street perhaps) with similar costs then I cannot see any retailer voluntarily moving.

i rarely venture far into the london road but would think that the hobby shop would benefit from being in somewhere like worthington street.
i think the insurance broker would prefer a more central location too.
