About an hour ago in Market Square a couple of blokes were pulling bits off of it and filling bags to put on a pick up truck. Hopefully they are just removing dead stuff and going to replace with evergreens for the Winter.

All seems well when I went through earlier.
Outside of the Summer months Tuesday is the only day that people seem to venture into Market Square.

It's so cold down there,the wind blows up from the sea.The alterations to the Market Square will not help just create a void space.The water feature and low seats will not encourage me to venture beyond Smiths.
We need small shops of interest and a few trees and flowers.

I suspect it has been removed for health and safety reasons over next Saturday's switch on - we all remember the fountain being cordoned off to stop a mass drowning of people in 3 inches of water.

Might be something to do with Christmas? A tree with lights. Like last year.

The tree is now where the crown was and I have been told that the latter has gone back to Holland. I didn't even know it came from there and wonder why it went back.

The Crown has not, as far as I'm aware, gone to Holland. As far as I understand it, it has been placed in tender loving care somewhere local for the winter so that it is all beautiful and in good nick for the spring when it will be placed in a more permanent home, in Pencester (I think). The old fountain is obsolete, no one makes the spare parts for it anymore, and damage can no longer be repaired effectively. If Coastal Communities Funding is awarded, work will begin next year on a rolling basis between Market Street and Bench Street through the Market Square from about April/May time with a completion date for all works of 30th November 2019. The programme of works is not finalised yet, but if, and it is IF, the bid for funding is successful, we could have the new water feature in place by the summer of 2018.

IF.................................................
By Rudyard Kipling
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same:.
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings,
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

So much for the Crown, here we have its pitiful replacement.

It looks nice but not at all special.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

The town can rejoice as the Crown has returned to its natural home in Market Square and looks very colourful but is quite a bit shorter now than before it left.
