17:0274241No, thats not the verdict of a coalition member on Labour's Shadow Cabinet, its the verdict of Labour's own Jack Straw....
He said that the Shadow Cabinet elections are "barking mad" and "daft", and that a third of it won't be appointed to government if Labour wins the next election.
Many of them are simply not up to the job at all and Milliband knows it.
Yes- this will certainly become known as the 'barking mad opposition'
Nothing new here about Labour - its just refreshing that a senior Labour insiders has admitted what we all know to be true.

17:0474242the best decision was to make alan johnson shadow chancellor and make ed balls shadow home secretary, know little about the new names, i doubt whether ed had a great pool of talent to choose from.

Time will tell, and Im, certain J Sttraw had better things to say, and im sure no correct.
We can continue to run down the Govt/Shadow cabinet
and in all honesty it wouldn't matter who our ED picked it would have been wrong according to our right wing rabid tory Baz.
That's all fine, let's see how they perform over the next 16 months.

17:1474247No Keith - I dont care at all who is picked for what in the Labour government, not my problem.
And, no I did not actually provide a verdict on them.,...... This is what your man, Jack Straw is saying about them.
Rather be a 'rabid right wing Tory' - thats a compliment from a loony left nut job....

That just shows how you misjudge.
I'm a lefty most of the time.
But hold right wing views as shown in other postings on other issues.
Because I'm willing to listen to people persuade me with good unbiased views.

18:0674258I havent as yet found the quote from Jack Straw but if he did say it then he was misguided. It strikes me as a very good shadow cabinet and in a way, although a surprise, I think Alan Johnson could be an inspired choice. There is a good mixture of new blood, but also some old hands like Johnson.
But here's the thing about Johnson...he is a very good communicator. He is very popular say on programmes like Question Time because he has that amiable yet common touch that appeals. He was one time touted as a possible Labour Leader because people recognised his abilities to good naturedly communicate.
Unfortunately in this day and age, age plays a part, and you cant lead a party anymore if you are getting on in years. Look briefly at the Menzies Campbell fiasco to see what I mean.
However Johnson will be very good as an antidote to all these very bad spending cuts coming, and will be the best placed Labour guy to capitalise on the Tories unfortunate and uncomfortable axe wielding position. Tories will be the baddies in all this, look at the benefits debacle, and Johnson will be the amiable uncle destined to play the nice guy alternative.
Looking at Question Time last night you can see how uncomfortable its going to be in the days ahead for the Tories. Its not easy in government and Baroness Varsi Tory Chariman got something of a roasting on tv last night in said programme.. bit of a change from the relatively comfortable position of opposition.

You have hit the nail on the head, the next 16 months are going to be very interesting.
I have met jack straw, and would be very surprized if made such comments.

18:1474262he said it on Radio 5 Live.....
I expect you will be hearing more of this....
PaulB - Do remember, these 'very bad spending cuts' are only because Labour screwed up the economy over 13 years in power.

I know you won't want advice, at the end of the day you are quite able to make your own mind up,
But to even things up, as only one sided advice at moment.
As stated on here before this Govt is in total chaos, Tories not wanting to be in with the Lib dems, Lib Dems not wanting to be in wth the tories(well the members)
Lib Dem's a party likely in 16 months to be destroyed at the ballot box.
Lots of differences even with the two parties, which surfaces all the time.
It's a time bomb waiting to go off

18:2874267Dream on Keith.
I see no chaos but I do see a lot of really good work being done.
- getting to grips with the deficit
- getting the cancer fund under way
- free schools plans advanced and more Academies
- a Prime Minister who is actually presentable and articulate
- QUANGOES, many getting abolished
- Welfare reform under way backed up with some good straight talking (Jeremy Hunt's recent comments)
Difficult decisions actually being made at last.

18:3474268Interesting facts about the "new" Labour shadow cabinet -
Half were at Oxbridge
40% were privately educated
All were on govt payroll under Gordon Brown (one was not a minister but chief whip)
Haven't worked out yet how many are millionaires.

18:3874269Considering your not interested in the shadow cabinet this is your 4th posting on it.
I think any work you Consider to be good(even thats only your view)will be undone by the vast differences between the two parties.
It's certanly not a dream, It's reality, and fine your not wishing it happen, and that's understanable, but it doesn't make those issues go away.
Theres major issues between the 2 parties still boiling, only time will tell what effect that will have on the country as a whole, and those two parties.

barry
agree with most of your post, just a few amendments, they are not getting to grips with the deficit, merely trying to.
the deficit and interest paid on it is still rising.
yes the prime minister is presentable and articulate, but also evasive.
anyone who saw his interview with adam boulton the other day will realise that he is yet another politician unable to give a straight answer.

18:4074272My mate John Healey MP went to a Comprehensive and his father Aidan Healey OBE is far from being a millionaire. Aidan went to Cambridge, was a Major in the SAS during WW2 and later became a Headmaster of an Approved school before joining the Prison Service and becoming their first Chief PE Officer in London. John his son spent many years doing voluntary work which Aidan supported both morally and financially. as I said a decent but well educated dedicated chap who has worked hard to reach his current post.

11:3874342Yes its an interesting line up and some names are very new to the front benches, but there is some experience in there to and that is perhaps needed time will tell.
The Tories have a job trying to get the country to accept what they are doing is fair, only they seem to think it is, well we shall see.
