Oh dear, gridlock reigns in Dover again. We've been told for the last few months that the port is preparing for a very busy summer with the Olympics, etc. Here we are, the first big holiday weekend of the summer and it's all gone to pot. Goodness knows how we're going to cope with the Olympics if we can't manage a Jubilee weekend and half-term holiday.

Despite all the "planning" and a travel update on the Port of Dover website warning at 4.15am of limited space on ferries and heavy traffic on the M20, there is no police prescence. One car has just got squashed at the Townwall Street roundabout. Clearly "planning" only goes so far!

There are just not enough police to man roundabouts as soon as a queue appears, it will only get worse as the thin blue line gets thinner and thinner.

an update.....operation mini stack now in operation.
for those who dont about this,it was somthing that was triald a few years back with police, highways etc.
it involves police holding traffic at the western hights roundabout thus keeping all roads and roundabouts clear for town traffic..
the lorrys are parked back towards courtwood roundabout, but only the inside lane is being used.

still static lorrys on the a 20,police on every roundabout.
it must be bad,an ambulance had to have a police outrider as escort from the western hieghts roundabout towards york street roundabout, with twos and blues going.

after 10 hours still static lorrys on the a 20.
acording the bbc local news the traffic tailed back 8 miles from the docks at its peak.
a slight overkill at the western hieghts roundabout,13 police officers 6 police cars and 1 moter bike.

Questions need to be asked! We've been told for months now that everyone is planning, and prepared for, a busy summer with the Olympics, etc. And yet, here we are again, with the same old problem. Once again many people will be leaving Dover with a poor impression of the town. If this was Heathrow Airport, it would be on the national news and Government ministers would be quizzed on why a major piece of national infrastructure cannot cope. Perish the thought that there is ever a major emergency in the town or port. Perhaps then, something would be done.

The Ferries can only go out full, same parking lanes used for each arrival at the berths, if there is sheer volume of traffic what is the answer?

If there is no answer, we have a summer of chaos to look forward to!

Half term is always a hectic time for the Port, this time coupled with a double bank holiday has obviously made it worse.

Somebody from the HB needs to liaise with the police so the latter can stop/stack the lorries before they hit the town.

We have been saying that for years, but the DHB tell us that its not their problem as the cars and lorries are not customers of the port until they enter the dock gates.

And its gonna get a lot worse as the freight business is starting to pick up, also during the Olympics %20 of freight trains on the tunnel have already been cancelled due to the amount of pre booked passenger tickets.

Said by Bob Goldfield at Dover Town Hall. He also stated that the new dock exit road would get traffic into the port quicker.

I heard that too Stewart, some time ago.
There is the Port of Dover Police who are deployed along the highways surrounding the Town. It seems that the decision to implement op. stack is always taken too late and the town gets blocked up.
