on the subject of war films, the vietnam war spawned some good ones.
apocalypse now was my favourite but the deerhunter and heavens gate were excellent too.

For the Vietnam War you could add We Were Soldiers and Full Metal Jacket.

Well I have seen 8 of the films on the original list - not sure that other than the 3 more commercial ones any would make my top 10 though.
I was surprised that neither Fritz Lang's Metroplis (most definitely one of my top 10) or Battleship Potemkin were mentioned or for that matter Seven Samurai by Kuroshawa
I would certainly have includes Solaris (1972) directed by Tarkovsiy, Brazil by Terry Gilliam, City of God (Cidade de Deus) by Fernando Meirelles, Once Were Warriors by Lee Tamahori, Blade Runner, The 39 Steps (1935 version) .

Yes Ross, well done on the objectivity front, but would anyone wish to watch these movies again and again in a short space of time?
I am still trying to figure out how many days are repeated in 'Groundhog Day', another entertaining film.
