  Thanks for that guys - it did look pretty against the stormy sky - too pretty not to photograph it to keep. I love all things to do with the sky - clouds, rainbows, lightning, everything. Yet one of the boys on my last bus last year asked me one day why the sky is blue - I didn't know so had to suggest he asked his teachers

  Oh wow - those two are stunning! That's a really unusual effect.
  
  I reckon your previous lovely picture was a rainbow, not a sundog Jacqui. The sundog effect is parallel to the sun as in my picture where I included the sun, if you see what I mean. Yours look very low.

  Thanks Phil, I think you're right because about 20mins before that it was raining and there was a rainbow over the horizon. Thanks for explaining it to me.

  Those pics were explained by the weatherman on Meridian this week, took me two attempts to write it down correctly. They are circumzenithal arcs (try saying that after a couple of drinks). Some people had sent pics in but they weren't as clear as yours.
